The Family Elan + support

Saturday 7 July / 7pm / £4, £3 advance

The Family Elan is currently performing as a trio, featuring Chris Hladowski on electrified bouzouki, elektrosaz & vocals, Harry Wheeler on electric bass and Mark Hearne on percussion & vocals. Collaborators past and present include the singer Stephanie Hladowski, percussionist Patrick Farmer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Hanna Tuulikki, and double bass player Seth Bennett.

The scope of the Family Elan's output is broad, ranging from self penned reflective meditations which rotate on a devotional harmonic axis, to irreverent interpretations of Bollywood hits, to Turkic folk forms filtered through a psychedelic rock praxis.

Perhaps the unifying strand in all this is a deep interest in traditional music forms and their reinvention through communal group playing, in the current instance very much rooted in the Bradford DIY "no rave" aesthetic.

La Jetée

Dir. Chris Marker (Cert. PG, 28 mins)

Friday 29 June / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3)

Pre-book on 01908 676 900

"Incredibly influential, dauntingly beautiful short made up almost entirely of stills. Inspired a generation of sci-fi directors." Film4

The movie that inspired Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, Chris Marker's La jetée is a landmark of science-fiction filmmaking, a 28-minute masterpiece told almost entirely in still frames.

Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future, it tells the story of an unnamed man whose vivid childhood recollections make him the perfect guinea pig for an experiment in time travel. After a lengthy and nightmarish period of conditioning, he is sent into the past, where he falls in love with a woman whom he once saw on a pier. At the experiment's conclusion, he is visited by an advanced race, who offer him the opportunity to journey into their future world, but he instead requests that they send him permanently into the past, where he can remain with the woman of his dreams.

Pushwagner Exhibition: Now Open

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 04:41 AM PDT

There was a great atmosphere at MK Gallery on Wednesday as over 350 people joined us for our summer party, which included the launch of our latest exhibition Pushwagner: Soft City.

The show brings together drawings, paintings and prints made over the last forty years by the visionary Norwegian artist, Hariton Pushwagner. With its literary allusions and piercing social commentary, his work has many affinities in the family of twentieth-century science fiction and its depictions of modern metropolitan life.

The exhibition runs at MK Gallery until 2 September 2012.
