The Chainmakers’ Strike at the BCLM

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 03:23 AM PDT

The Chainmakers' Strike is a new work of music theatre telling the
story of the chain making women of Cradley Heath and their battle to
establish a minimum wage in 1910.

The Chainmakers' Strike creates a bed of electronic sounds formed from
samples of anvils, metallic percussion and female voices (including
recordings of a community choir singing songs adapted for the strikers
themselves) upon which both sung and spoken text tell a story of huge
historical significance.

The Black Country Living Museum is holding a day long festival
celebrating the achievements of the chainmakers on Saturday 20th
October 2012 and Bristol based theatre company And Then We Danced will
be performing The Chainmakers' Strike at 11am and 2:30pm.

New Commissions for LOV

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 03:22 AM PDT

Lincolnshire One Venues (LOV) is seeking to invest in a new performance work for young
audiences between ages 12-19 to be shown in small/medium-scale venues. We're open to
productions that are targeted at a specific age-range within this band.

The work will be excellent in quality, stimulating and innovative in content and should be easily
accessible to young audiences.

The commission should demonstrate the potential for income generation through future activities
such as touring royalties etc.

If your project is also funded from other sources you must tell us where this funding comes from
and, if this funding is unconfirmed, when you will have it confirmed.

This commissioning process is to develop new work to be premiered in Lincolnshire, however,
where applications are for a co-commission with other organisations then the work should not have
had 'significant' public exposure prior to its Lincolnshire presentations.

The commission will include a minimum of four performances between autumn 2013 and spring
2014 taking place at the following four venues in the LOV network:

• Lincoln Performing Arts Centre
• Riverhead Theatre, Louth
• Stamford Arts Centre
• Terry O'Toole Theatre, North Hykeham

As part of LOV's commitment to creating work in collaboration with its audience we would look for
the commissioned artist/company to maximise young people's public engagement in the creative
process through exploring innovative methods of testing, participation and dissemination and it is
expected that a reasonable proportion of the new work's development will take place in the county.
LOV is keen to work with artists/companies that are able to demonstrate a track record of engaging
with young people through innovative informal learning programmes and it is expected that a
series of interactive workshops/platform events and online opportunities would be delivered as part
of the overall project in collaboration with LOV's Paul Hamlyn Foundation Project team.

The commissioned artist/company will work with LOV to undertake evaluation throughout the
project; we would particularly welcome a creative approach to this process.

LOV Support

In addition to funding of up to £10,000 for the commission, the artist/company will receive:
• Space for rehearsal and scratch/work-in-progress presentations
• Technical Rehearsal Support
• Local and regional Marketing/PR
• A place in participating venues' programmes.
• Young People's engagement activity support from the LOV Paul Hamlyn Foundation Project
team.

How To Apply

1. Open Call
• Provide a CV/Company Profile outlining past examples of your work.
• Provide a short proposal (maximum 2 A4 pages), outlining the proposed work and how you
envisage LOV being involved in the creative process.

• Include an estimated budget for how much the piece will cost to make and give a
breakdown of how you will spend the money. Proposals must be all inclusive of fees,
materials, equipment hire, print, travel and subsistence.

• Please provide contact details for two relevant referees with whom you have worked within
the past two years
Send these details to Craig Morrow, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, University of Lincoln, Brayford
Pool, Lincoln LN6 7TS or email with 'LOV Commission Proposal' in the subject bar to
cmorrow@lincoln.ac.uk by 10am on Wednesday 31 October 2012

2. Shortlisting
From these a shortlist of 3-6 applicants will be asked to produce a more detailed proposal to
include a fuller description of the idea, budget, other sources of income, recent artistic experiences,
etc in preparation for an interview and presentation on Wednesday 14 November 2012 at Stamford
Arts Centre.

The commissioned artists/company will be informed by Friday 30 November 2012
If you have any questions about the LOV commissions please feel free to contact Craig Morrow
(Lincoln Performing Arts Centre), 01522 837670 / cmorrow@lincoln.ac.uk
