The Future’s Bright for SMEs

On 14 November, Nottingham Trent University will be hosting an event to showcase the work of designers and inventors involved in the Future Factory project.

The project, started in 2009, aims to help SMEs in the East Midlands do business in a more efficient and sustainable way, by providing a place to share ideas on sustainable design and helping them "design out" wasteful materials and practices. Since its launch, it has helped more than 500 businesses, facilitated almost 100 collaborations between SMEs and NTU staff, and supported 107 placements for graduates. It is 40% funded by the European Regional Development Fund, and 60% by NTU, and is a finalist for both a Green Gowns Award, and a Midlands Business Award.

This year's event, taking place from 4.30-6.30 pm at the Old Chemistry Theatre, Nottingham Conference Centre, will showcase designs from Future Factory's inventors, such as the Wind Harvester turbine (pictured, by local designer Heath Evdemon), the Charbecue (a fuel efficient barbecue) and lighting made from used Coca-Cola bottles. There will also be an opportunity to take part in a complimentary Fair Trade food and drink taster session, where you can also enter a prize draw to win a Fair Trade food hamper, and a green Christmas market, where current and past Future Factory collaborators will be selling their products. SMEs can also find out more about how Future Factory might be able to help their businesses.
