Encounters with Drawing: Angela Rogers

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 06:51 AM PDT

Avenue Gallery is pleased to present Encounters with Drawing, an exhibition by Sussex-based artist Angela Rogers which explores drawing as a means of social encounter through the process of collaborative drawing.

Central to the exhibition will be a series of works entitled 'drawing conversations', in which Angela investigates the actuality of one-to-one human encounters through drawing with strangers she meets in galleries and other public places to create collaborative artworks which form a concrete record of that exchange.

Angela explains:

"I have always been curious about chance encounters, and I wanted to see if I could use drawing to meet people by asking them to make a drawing with me. After initial protestations 'I'm no good at drawing!', I explained we would take it in turns to draw on the same piece of paper like a conversation, most people were reassured and keen to get going.  What could drawing the spaces between us reveal? What could I learn from using drawing as means of social encounter? "

These questions became the subject of Angela's PhD research, and alongside the 'drawing conversations' she will be displaying large research maps that she used to document and manage the research process.  In contrast, she will also be showing a series of personal drawings made in the studio, which bring the openness and spontaneity from the collaborative drawing process to a different kind of visual encounter.

Encounters With Drawing will run from 2-30 November and is open to the public Mondays-Fridays 10am-4pm.  Admission is free.  Avenue Gallery is located in The University of Northampton's Avenue Campus on St. George's Avenue, Northampton NN2 6JD.  For more information about the exhibition please contact the Gallery on 01604 893046 or email gallery@northampton.ac.uk.

Articulation 2: Contemporary Views

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 06:59 AM PDT

ARTICULATION

Series 2 - Contemporary Views

Directed and chaired by John Harper, Visiting Fellow in Fine Art at The University of Northampton

The University of Northampton is now taking bookings for two new events in the Articulation series of public talks on aspects of contemporary art.

We will be welcoming Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain on 6 November, while Bill Drummond (artist, musician, writer and record producer) and Andrew Collins (writer, broadcaster and film critic) will be debating their opinions on the contemporary art scene on 20 November.  Those of you who came to the inaugural Articulation talks earlier in the year will know that these sold out very quickly, so early booking is recommended.   Each talk will last 90 minutes, including a chaired Q&A session.

Entry to each talk is £4 / £2.50 concessions (free to current University of Northampton students).  To book a place please contact Suzanne Stenning on 01604 893050 or email Suzanne.stenning@northampton.ac.uk.

PENELOPE CURTIS

NOW AND THEN

Tuesday 6 November 6.30pm

Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain, considers that art should be related across time.

In this talk she will share her thoughts on the art of today, its dialogue with the past and the concept of continuity in an age of continual change.

BILL DRUMMOND AND ANDY COLLINS

ART Vs ART: MEDIA, OWNERSHIP, WORD, MUSIC

Tuesday 20 November 6.30pm

Collins and Drummond both attended Northampton School of Art, but twelve years apart.  However, their varied career paths in the arts, media and popular culture have occasionally crossed.

Both were taught by John Harper who will chair their lively discussion.

Their ironically 'oppositional' views, though voiced with mutual respect, "will result in a rigorous debate that will be full frontal and may involve blood-letting ... little will be resolved".

The audience will be encouraged to become involved.
