This is Hallowe’en: Ghoulish goings-on in Nottingham

Hallowe'en PumpkinsIt's that time of year again, the time when the nights draw in, the air gets chilly, and we all sit in the dark with the TV off so we don't have to answer the door to trick-or-treaters. Or maybe that last one's just me… Anyway, Hallowe'en is upon us once again, and Nottingham has risen to the occasion in customary style, with plenty to keep all ages entertained. So here's our round up of the best ghoulish goings-on in our fair city this Hallowe'en.

Pumpkin carvers young and old can show off their skills at Hart's Hotel this coming Sunday. Prizes will be given for most imaginative pumpkin carving. Past successes have included famous faces, movie scenes and  "conceptual pumpkins" so entrants are encouraged to think outside the box! There's also a fancy-dress competition for the kids. Submit your pumpkins by 12pm on Sunday. Judging begins at 5. Find out more here.

For those of you who like nothing more than a good old scary movie, Broadway Cinema is running its annual Mayhem Festival, from 31 Oct – 4 Nov. Kicking off next Wednesday with "Live Horror Stories for Hallowe'en" and finishing on the following Sunday with the UK premiere of Indonesian horror Dead Mine, taking in a live fear experiment and a fiendishly difficuly quiz along the way, Mayhem is a must for horror movie fans. Broadway will also be screening horror classic The Shining, fully remastered, during the festival.

On Saturday, Wollaton Hall is hosting a Hallowe'en craft fair and market, with plenty of creepy gifts on offer.

And if you fancy a sleepless night (or possibly several!) local ghost hunting company Dusk Till Dawn Events are running a ghost hunt in the Nottingham Caves under the Broadmarsh Centre. Home to strange lights, creepy noises and reported poltergeist activity, due to their rich history, the Caves are very popular with ghost hunters. Dusk Till Dawn's tour is £49, and there are only a few places left, so if you want to be scared out of your wits, you'd better hurry up.
