Film Screening / Zine making - Avant GardeningThursday 1 November / 6.30pm / Free

Join Avant-Gardening as they explore the archives of otherness as portrayed in vintage popular culture and consider the messages included in pulp fiction and B movies of the time. Through the creation of a fanzine we will explore how the appropriation of the image and creative experimentation subverted the push to conformity and normality. Illustrated with short films, mind bending film clips and an eclectic soundtrack of grooves and retro rock we will explore the wilder fringes of pop culture and the move towards experimentation that challenged the orthodoxy of the time.

Avant-Gardening is a collective of artists and curators who are all experienced practitioners of socially-engaged collaborative arts.

The movie chronicles Rocket's life as a young boy as he deals with his law bending brother and his gang, all the way to his teen years as a pseudo hippie. As the crime level soars in brutality, Rocket begins to realise his niche as a photographer is his only means of staying honest. With a psychopathic thug named "Lil Ze" looking to take over the slum, Rocket's career will take him on his most dangerous task of all.

Legendary New York graffiti artist Lee Quinones plays the part of Zoro, the city's hottest and most elusive graffiti writer. The actual story of the movie concerns the tension between Zoro's passion for his art and his personal life, particularly his strained relationship with fellow artist Rose. But this isn't why one watches Wild Style-this movie is 'the' classic hip-hop flick, full of great subway shots, breakdancing, freestyle MCing and rare footage of one of the godfathers of hip-hop, Grandmaster Flash, pulling off an awesome scratch-mix set on a pair of ancient turntables. A must-see for anyone interested in hip-hop music and culture.
