Local Poet Goes National

Posted: 02 May 2012 03:55 AM PDT

Milton Keynes' Poet Laureate, Mark Niel will soon be heard by a national audience on BBC Radio 2 after being asked to be the "Bard of 2Day".

2DAY is all of Radio 2 in one day. Things sound a bit different to normal as all their presenters take to the air across the day, along with some amazing guests and artists. Mark will be soaking up the atmosphere and penning a poem as he goes along to be broadcast in the afternoon. Mark said:

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to see and be part of national radio. The schedule for the day is amazing and I hope I can do justice to it by writing a poem in such a short time".

The opportunity came after Mark was commissioned to write a poem for the Diamond Jubilee weekend which has been recorded by Imelda Staunton and will be broadcast on Sunday 3 June as part of the station's Holiday Weekend celebrations. Mark was honoured to be asked but has to keep the content close to his chest.

"It was a privilege but also a challenge to try and strike the appropriate tone to celebrate such a fantastic royal milestone. Fortunately, the producers seemed happy with the poem and I look forward to hearing the recorded version on 3 June".

These events have been very timely for Mark as he recently went full time as a poet and performer following redundancy after a twenty year career in Financial Services. Mark decided to take the opportunity to build on his growing reputation as a performance poet after making his debut as a poet at a Poetry Kapow! event at Madcap in Wolverton just four years ago. He has won many poetry "Slam" competitions and he has been booked to perform at the prestigious Latitude Festival later this year.
