'Somewhere South of Normal' CD Launch event REVIEW

Posted: 02 May 2012 03:31 AM PDT

MK's poet laureate wowed the audience Thursday night with his stand-up poetry performance 'Somewhere South of Normal' at University Centre Milton Keynes.

After performing in poetry slams, recitals and festivals up and down the country, Mark Niel has settled back into MK to show his poetry to the community.

The gig was a fundraiser in aid of Arts Gateway MK, the organisation that helped Mark start his career in poetry after leaving a steady job in the financial sector.

MK Council's Carmen Kane had never seen Mark prior to his performance.

"We are very excited and a bit curious" she said before the event started.

"We've never seen Mark before and never been to a social event here at the University Centre. It's a fantastic space."

The poet has been part of the facility for the last month, writing and giving guest lectures to students.

Kate Stephens, Director of Operations at UCMK helped bring Mark in to work among the staff.

"The role of the University Centre is to start people on the road to careers and in this case, second careers.

"It's a very brave thing to do from Mark's point of view but it's been a privilege to have him work with us and we want to support him in every way we can."

After his extraordinary set (that threw up some surprises) Mark spoke about how thrilled he was performing back in Milton Keynes.

"It was fantastic to stand up in front of a home crowd" he said.

"MK means a great deal to me and it's always going to be my base.

"I just want to help push the city forward."

Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward - 24th - 26th May @ The Chrysalis

Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward

This famous farce will be performed at The Chrysalis Theatre by The Third Age Players (part of the MK University of the Third Age) at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday 24 May and Friday 25 May, and at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 26 May.

The plot? Successful writer, Charles Condomine, is conducting research for his latest novel about the occult and has asked his wife, Ruth, to arrange a dinner party including two other guests, Dr and Mrs Bradman, and Madame Arcati, an eccentric local medium who will then hold a séance. You, dear viewer, will eavesdrop on the evening, which promises some 'life-changing' events for both the hosts.

First performed in London's West End in the summer of 1941, the play was so successful that it set a record for non-musical plays of 1,997 consecutive performances. Since then it has retained its popularity with audiences worldwide and last year's London production starred Alison Steadman as Madame Arcati.

The 1945 film, directed by David Lean and starring Rex Harrison, Kay Hammond, Constance Cummings and Margaret Rutherford, also remains a perennial favourite - a frequent choice for Film4 afternoon schedules.

Open Exhibition - A document of transit - Diaspora

Posted: 01 May 2012 06:50 AM PDT

Diaspora
Classically the term “Diaspora” refered to the movement and dispersal of people from
their homeland. A growing body of research redefines “Diaspora” as people being on the
move without contextualising the need to identify the homeland and by extension their
existence.

Cultural identity is important to us all: What is Yours?
UCMK Galleries is inviting a textual, or visual response, which relates to this
cultural position.

UCMK Poet-in Residence Mark Niel, artist Gino Ballantyne and photographer Liam
Cunningham will curate this dynamic installation during May.

Your submissions will be a document of transit.

Recorded on arrival; placed in the exhibition; then catalogued for movement into the
archive of the University Centre library - at the end of the exhibition.

This is an open exhibition with no fees. All work submitted will be displayed during
May.

We invite submissions, which must be no larger than A5. They can be drawings,
paintings, prints, text works, poetry, and photographs.

The submission period for your works is 1st May until 21st May.

All work submitted must include the artists name and contact details and be posted.

Postcards Anon – a great way to raise money for a local charity

Age UK Milton Keynes need your help!!!

They are trying to collect hundreds of original artworks that are the size of a postcard, so that they can be displayed at an exhibition and then sold to raise funds for them.

Age UK Milton Keynes is a local independent charity that provides support and services to older people in the Milton Keynes area.

The postcard size artwork must be original but can be painted, drawn, etched, knitted, collage – it’s up to you.

Most importantly, you must sign your artwork on the back only, so that all items are anonymous!

Once you have created your piece of art that is the size of a postcard (6”x 4” or 7”x5”) please send it to me at the address above.

The exhibition will be held at The University Gallery, 200 Silbury Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes in November 2012. Please send me your work by Wednesday 31st October.

You will be invited to attend the exhibition which will be held on more than one day.

Why not get your family, friends and neighbours to join in? The more the merrier!

Any questions, email Diane Payne: cpayne2892@aol.com
