Claymills Pumping Station Museum

As Claymills had a steam weekend over the Bank Holiday, Mrs Cellarman and I decided to visit. The steam days were Sunday and Monday, but we decided to firstly have a look on Saturday, mainly because while it costs £4 per adult (concession rate) per day, if you join them, it costs £9 and that allows unlimited access for the member + 1 other. I duly signed the form, then we were taken for an excellent guided tour by the membership secretary, Steve.

Along we went with cameras and tripods on the Sunday to take lots of images:

The carpenters' shop

The automatic hoppers feeding the boilers. These are loaded by hand, but then coal is fed into the furnace via a fascinating bit of machinery.

No chance of getting any HDR images, with the beam moving, so had to judge the moment when it was at the top of its stroke and press the shutter. Used 6400 ISO for this image.

Another 6400 ISO, plus some flash to illuminate the foreground. That's Mrs C the other side of the machinery. She'll post her own pics, no doubt.

They have a total of 12 steam engines as well as the two huge beam engines, and all are at work on steam days. Eventually they hope to get the other two beam engines working, but there's a lot of rust to be removed first!

We will be returning again and again - there's so much to photograph. For the best images, I will go when the engines are not steaming, but steam days are so good - that smell!!!

Oh, I nearly forgot, they have a cafe which serves excellent cakes, coffee & tea.
