New Art and Design building plans are announced

Posted: 04 May 2012 08:31 AM PDT

Planning consent has been granted for an impressive new building on the University of Lincoln's Brayford campus.

The new purpose built School of Art and Design is expected to open next year and will incorporate a sculpture terrace and public gallery. It will also include a low level section that preserves the uninterrupted view of Lincoln Cathedral from Tritton Road to the south of the city.

Sitting in between the landmark white Architecture Building, which opened in October 2003 and the new School of Engineering which was opened in January this year by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, the new School will incorporate design elements of both buildings.  Our School which has been spread out at locations across the city will now finally come under one roof, bringing it closer to our sister School of Architecture.

The four-storey building will include a series of classrooms and seminar spaces, large open plan studios, smaller studios, state-of-the-art Mac suites and staff office space.

The University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ieuan Owen said: "We are continually re-investing in our campus and facilities to enhance the student experience and are delighted that we now have the go-ahead to construct another iconic building on the main Brayford Campus.

"The new art and design building will have a high spec finish, but be industrial in feel, with exposed bricks and timber boarding that can be used to exhibit student work. It will be light and airy creating a welcoming space for students, staff and visitors.

"Using the new gallery and sculpture terrace spaces, we hope to create an exciting programme of events showcasing work by local and international artists that will attract and engage the public and contribute to Lincoln's growing arts scene."

Construction is expected to start later this year, finishing in late summer 2013, with staff and students moving in for the start of the academic year in September 2013. For more information, contact our Press Office
