Research Café - Academic Craft Circles Posted: 24 Apr 2012 05:27 AM PDT Research Café - Academic Craft CirclesResearch Café - Multi-Disciplinary ApproachesResearch-Knowledge-Practice Lab: an art and design research eventCategory: 25/05/2012 - 10:30:00City North Campus, Speaker: Dr Mick WilsonRKP Lab is a new platform where exchange can take place. An alternative conference format, which aims to prioritise discourse, dialogue and debate relevant to practice- based/practice-led research students in art and design. Open to all post-graduate students and research staff, who are invited to a day of interaction, to initiate dialogue, foster connections and reflexive critique around our key themes of: research-knowledge-practice. As research in the creative and practice-based disciplines has grown and developed in recent years, so traditional hierarchies of knowledge have come into question; no longer is it possible to think in terms of a single pathway leading from pure research through to practical application. PhD students in art and design have therefore found themselves at the forefront of complex debates around the relationship between research, knowledge and practice. What is the place of practical and situated forms of knowledge in the research process? How does one configure a research practice that answers to the demands of the academy to build subject knowledge at the same time as responding to the needs and desires that motivate creative practice? We hope to surface these issues in this event through interaction and dialogue amongst arts and design researchers. '[Philosophers] must no longer accept concepts as a gift, nor merely purify and polish them, but first make and create them, present them and make them convincing.' 1 This topic will be explored during the day in activities including: Keynote Mick Wilson (BA, MA, MSc, PhD) is an artist, writer and educator with eclectic research and professional interests. He has lectured internationally on art research, public culture, creative education and urbanism and is the principal investigator for 'SHARE (2010–2013)', a major European research network for doctoral studies across the creative arts with participants from 29 different countries. Speed dating All participants will take an active role in this session to briefly introduce their current topic of study or future research interests in face-to-face discussions. We offer you an opportunity to seduce, amuse, fascinate and create potential collaborations! Dialogues Speakers, working in pairs, will present a 'live' dialogue on the themes of the conference to audience members with time given before the event to prepare a conversational approach to the conference themes. If you would like to be a speaker in the dialogue sessions, please submit an abstract (maximum 300 words) outlining your own approach to research, knowledge and practice by 13 April 2012. Selected speakers will be notified by 27 April 2012. All participants are encouraged to submit a short written statement (maximum 100 words) or A3 poster (to be displayed at the event) outlining their research interests and how they relate to the key themes, by 11 May 2012. All submitted abstracts, statements and posters will be collated and disseminated to those who attend. RKP Lab is organised by BIAD PhD students with support from BIAD Research. 1.
