Consequences: Diverse to Mosaic Britain...

Consequences: Diverse to Mosaic Britain - new book by local author Susan Popoola

The August riots of 2011 started off in London and spread across different parts of the country. People questioned whether or not the riots were really about the shooting of a young black man by the police. That is open to debate. What is, however, unquestionable is that there are segments of society that are disengaged from the mainstream.

While some may believe that this was just the latest in a series of passing incidents, there are many who look at the situation and are concerned that the levels of discontent are likely to be reflected across the country for years to come.

This book represents a journey to gain some understanding into what it is that leads everyday people to support the BNP, the National Front or other similar parties/groups, to understand how Britain has come to be such a diverse country and to look into how we ultimately need to live and work together.

Susan’s objective in writing this book is not to provide a complete historical account. Rather, her hope is to create a greater awareness and understanding of the issues in order to encourage people to look beyond the surface, openly discuss the issues and seek solutions.

The Sip and Sew Society

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 09:04 AM PDT

The Sip and Sew Society get together on a Wednesday evening at York House to assist and facilitate those who would like to make and take home decorative or textile items they have been wanting to produce but haven't had the means or confidence to do so. The Sip and Sew Society are not taught sessions but exists to enable a skill share with the space, time, equipment and some of the materials you need to get things made for yourself as well as the "you time" you rarely get elsewhere. It is a meeting place for friends old and new to have a cup of tea, a piece of cake and some nice chats. The Sip and Sew Society offers sewing machines, scissors, a supply of scrap fabrics, reference books and magazines for inspiration.

Paganism: not a spiritual path but a sitting among the trees by Dr. Graham Harvey

In the spring of 2011 artists Olivia Plender and Patrick Staff invited a small group of participants to live together for a week in John’s Lee Wood, Leicestershire, in a critical exploration of folk revivalism, communal living and collaborative film-making.

Borrowing a format from radical outdoor educational programmes started in the early twentieth century, such as the Kibbo Kift, Woodcraft Folk and Forest School Camps, this temporary intentional community explored how group identities are constructed in relation to histories, traditions and ideologies. Through workshops, discussion and the collaborative film-making process the participants address the history of the counter culture in relation to queer politics in the British context.

The resulting film, rather than telling the story of their experience in the woods, reflects on whether living experiments such as this have the potential to produce new forms of collectivity.

Life in the Woods (2011) a film by Olivia Plender and Patrick Staff, in collaboration with Daniel Bower, Red Chidgey, Ade Clarke, William Clarke, Jesse Darling, Richard Dowling, Zia Dowling-Haigh, June Gillert, Amy James, Michael Mertens, Jamie Partridge, Natalie Raven, Hester Reeve, Yerang Seong, Sofia Törnblad.

The screening will be followed by a talk on Paganism by Dr. Graham Harvey, a Reader in Religious Studies at the Open University. He has researched among Jews, Pagans and indigenous peoples. His publications includeListening People, Speaking Earth: Contemporary Paganism (Hurst 2008, 2nd edition) and Animism: Respecting the Living World (Hurst 2005). Brought up near Stonehenge, he really got to understand Paganism in a wood in Northumberland.

Ryan Bingham's job is to fire people from theirs. The anguish, hostility, and despair of his 'clients' has left him falsely compassionate, living out of a suitcase, and loving every second of it. When his boss hires arrogant young Natalie, she develops a method of video conferencing that will allow termination without ever leaving the office - essentially threatening the existence Ryan so cherishes. Determined to show the naive girl the error of her logic, Ryan takes her on one of his cross country firing expeditions, but as she starts to realise the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls to his way of life.
