Capital Theatre Festival: 24-27 May

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 02:26 PM PDT

Capital Theatre Festival is delighted to announce three winning plays resulting from a national script call out in January 2012. calyx by sean burn, Without a Hand to Hold by Rob Joiner and Cuddles by Joseph Wilde will be premiered at mac birmingham from 24-27 May, as part of a programme dedicated to finding exciting new voices.

sean burn is a writer, performer and outsider artist with a growing international reputation. His play, calyx, is a poetic and lyrical piece about a young girl's transition from captivity to freedom.

Rob Joiner graduated from the University of Birmingham's prestigious MPhil in Playwriting Studies in 2010. Without a Hand to Hold is a deceptively simple story about two men living on the margins of society.

Joseph Wilde is a bold new voice emerging from The Royal Court and Chichester Festival Theatre young writers' programmes. Cuddles is an horrific and darkly comic cautionary tale of control. Part acerbic satire, part psychological horror, and part domestic tragedy of almost Greek proportions.

The three plays tackle complementary themes which resonate with the Festival's ethos of promoting original and contemporary new work.

Alongside the main performances, Capital Theatre Festival will provide a host of activities for theatre audiences to sample. From new play premieres, to writing workshops and site-specific explorations, the events are designed to promote new writers and new work emerging from the West Midlands and beyond.

The programme includes workshops from Soho Theatre, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Stan's Cafe, plus an evening of short plays hosted by Talking Birds and a new slant on the global phenomenon of Pecha Kucha.

The Festival is run in association with mac birmingham and will run from 24-27 May 2012. Tickets can be booked via www.macarts.co.uk or tel. 0121 446 3232. Full programme details can be found on: www.capitalplays.co.uk

Capital Theatre Festival is supported by The National Lottery through Arts Council England and The Sir Barry Jackson Trust

Gi20: Opportunity for 10 Artists or Companies wishing to develop new touring work.

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 02:04 PM PDT

Remarkable has launched its second year of Gi20 – a national showcase for new and emerging outdoor artists and projects.

This is a great opportunity for 10 artists/companies wishing to develop new, small-medium scale touring work for the outdoors.  Not only will the selected productions be presented on the Southbank at Watch This Space Festival, National Theatre and Stockton International Riverside Festival but each project will receive a development fund of £2k along with the chance to win either an Audience or Jury cash prize of £1000 as well as additional bookings at Watch This Space and London Pleasure Gardens later on in the summer.

This initiative aims to provide UK based artists working in the outdoor arts sector the opportunity to develop new small-medium scale projects. Gi20 will also nurture emerging companies and established artists from a range of art forms (circus, theatre, dance or visual arts) who are interested in creating work for the outdoors for the first time.

Gi20 provides an environment for artists to learn from experienced leaders in the field, the opportunity to present their work in front of UK programmers and mentoring and production support in order to develop successful touring projects.

Please visit the Gi20 website for more info and to download an application form.

Theatre Cuppa – 25 April

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 02:01 PM PDT

INFORMAL GATHERINGS FOR THEATRE/FILM/TV/RADIO/COMMUNITY ARTS PROFESSIONALS IN THE MIDLANDS

Time for a 'Cuppa'!  If you fancy joining us for the next one, we will be at the usual place – Coffee Room, Hurst St, Birmingham, opp. B'ham Hippodrome – on Wednesday 25th April 7.30pm onwards.  Whether you are joining us for a short or long time, early or later in the evening you will be very welcome.  Children are welcome at the Coffee Room so don't let that stop you coming if you want to be there.  Hopefully we will have another daytime one in the next few months for those who prefer that.

If you haven't been before, Theatre Cuppa has been going for about a year now and happens roughly every couple of months or whenever we have time to organise one.  Its for anyone working in Theatre, film, TV, radio, community arts who would like to come along and connect with other people you may know and/or connect with some you don't, in whatever way you want, personally or professionally. The tone is friendly, casual and unpressured and its a way of celebrating and underlining our artistic community here in the West Midlands.

If you are coming for the first time alone, come and grab one of us – Rochi Rampal or Ali Belbin.  We will be the ones wearing a carnation!  Please feel free to pass the date on to anyone you think might be interested in coming.  Look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes

Rochi Rampal and Ali Belbin

OPPORTUNITIES FOR WEST MIDLANDS ARTISTS AND CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 01:51 PM PDT

Birmingham Hippodrome is planning its 3rd annual festival programme of outdoor performances: Six Summer Saturdays 2012. The event takes place at a range of prime City Centre locations from 11 July – 27 Aug. To see what we got up to last year:  www.sixsummersaturdays.com

In 2011, Six Summer Saturdays commissioned 3 artists / groups based in the region to create and present new pieces of outdoor work and also, provided a range of informal networking and professional development opportunities for West Midlands artists. The feedback from those involved was very positive and Birmingham Hippodrome is keen to build on this aspect of the programme in 2012.

Below are some of the ways that you can get involved this year. Although our funding for Six Summer Saturdays will not be confirmed until mid May, some aspects of the programme will happen irrespectively of that. Please let us know if you  have any plans to create new work for outdoor contexts this summer.Opportunities for Artists in the West Midlands

Commissions (up to £2500) – if you have an idea or plans for a new outdoor performance piece suitable for presentation on the streets of Birmingham this summer, we would like to hear about your current plans or ideas at the briefing event on 12th April or by email in time for Monday 23rd April. Commissioned artists part of Six Summer Saturdays this year will receive mentoring support and valuable input from the Six Summer Saturdays technical and production team. New commissions will be selected in advance of the funding result.

Natural Theatre Company – 'The Reds'. Natural Theatre Company is one the most established street performance companies in the UK, presenting small and large scale happenings nationally and internationally for over 40 years. Birmingham Hippodrome are delighted to welcome them back to Birmingham, where they will be running a two day training workshop for approximately ten participants, to create a performance especially for Six Summer Saturdays 2012. This is a fantastic opportunity, particularly suitable for emerging artists and recent graduates who would like to learn from some of the best in the business.

Conversations and Networking – throughout Six Summer Saturdays, we will invite you to several conversation and networking events, where you can meet regionally based and visiting artists and practitioners who have experience of presenting work outdoors; share perspectives, experiences and ideas; and find more about the outdoor arts scene nationally and internationally.

Visit to MintFest 2012 – Mintfest is an international street arts showcase festival and a great opportunity to see a fantastic range of work of all scales and to meet producers, programmers and bookers from the UK and international scene. If successful with our ACE application, Birmingham Hippodrome can offer small subsidies for up to 10 artists to attend. Mintfest will take place in Kendal 31st August – 2nd September 2012.

Timeline

Birmingham Hippodrome have submitted a Grants for the Arts application and will find out if this has been successful in mid May. Some aspects of Six Summer Saturdays will go ahead, irrespective of ACE funding, and we will keep you posted about key dates as soon as possible. Deadline for ideas for commissions is Monday 23rd April.
