Merry Making Christmas Craft Fair at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum Posted: 11 Nov 2011 01:41 AM PST On Saturday 19 November the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum will be getting into the festive spirit by hosting its annual Making Merry Christmas Craft Fair. Between 11.00am and 4.00pm there will be a feast of arts, crafts and music for everyone to enjoy as well as the usual special treats in the Herbert's shop! For one day only the Herbert's covered court will be filled to the brim with local crafts people selling everything from jewellery to monsters via hand-stitched cushions, unique artworks and hand-carved woodcrafts. Whilst visitors meander around the stalls they can soak up the festive spirit created by five of the best regional choirs singing a range of traditional, gospel and world-seasonal songs throughout the day. The five choirs performing are World Song, ensemble 1985, Silver Lining Harmony Chorus, Free Harmony and Soulful. If visitors wanted to take part in some festive singing they can join in with Scratch Choir. From 10.30am until 3.30pm participants will be taught seasonal songs from around the world from scratch and then given the opportunity, should they wish, to join the famous WorldSong choir in their performance. The Scratch Choir is FREE to attend. The Herbert will also be holding two Wreath Making workshops. Visitors can create their own beautiful festive decorations in this artist led workshop for adults. The first workshop takes place between 11.00am and 1.00pm and the second between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Each session costs £10 and will include all the materials participants need. Booking is essential and can be made by calling 024 7629 4774 or at Herbert reception. Families can enjoy FREE child-friendly make and take workshops to create beautiful and personalised wrapping paper and tags. Jessica Pinson, Events Officer at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum said "Making Merry is the perfect event to help get into the festive spirit and get all those tricky-to-buy-for friends and relatives a special and unique gift. The variety of stalls means that all the family will be catered for and the choirs will serenade the shopping stress away". The Herbert's galleries will also be open during the event including the exceptional George Shaw: I woz ere. Visitors can see some of the amazing humbrol paintings of the Tile Hill estate that the artist grew up on. Making Merry takes place on Saturday 19 November between 11.00am and 4.00pm. Admission is FREE For further information on FREE family events, exhibitions, talks and activities visit www.theherbert.org or join our family mailing list at www.theherbert.org/mailing-list. |

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 03:07 PM PST According to recent studies, 65% of children have some form of an imaginary companion before the age of 7. Whether invisible to the rest of the world or a trusty, stuffed companion, creating friends to help us navigate the world is a common activity many of us have engaged in. Guy Guy Buddy is a participatory project designed to recapture this playful side of our imagination and present our imaginary friends of the past as a collaborative activity. I'm asking the public to send me any representational form of their childhood imaginary friend(s): submitted drawings, written descriptions (I'll create drawings from the description), and/or photos of your favorite friend growing up. The submitted materials will be used to create conglomerate, anthropomorphic characters in a digital format and other media. I will combine these references to create new "friends" we can claim as a whole. By recalling our friends from the realm of play, Guy Guy Buddy attempts to establish the idea of the "Mind" as a shared space. Ideally, the presentation and interaction with conglomerate imaginary friends will lead us into the recognition of our shared experiences and try to breach separations to create very real "imaginary" communities. To participate, email a description of your childhood imaginary friend to guyguybuddy@gmail.com. Please include the name of your friend, approximate age you had this friend, adventures you undertook and most importantly, a description of your friend. The description can be a drawing, written description, and/or photograph, whatever is the best representative of your childhood imaginary friend. If you wish to remain anonymous, please indicate and this request will be respected. For a demonstration of Guy Guy Buddy, please visit http://peterwhittenberger.com/popup.php?img=435.jpg. |
