Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Media Design (with specialization in Computer Graphics)

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 03:03 PM PDT

School of Design
Wellington, New Zealand

Starting in 2012, the School of Design introduces a new Masters qualification in Computer Graphics as part of its MDI offerings. It runs in collaboration with the Computer Science Computer Graphics Masters qualification; the MDI places a focus on aesthetics and creative output using computer graphics techniques while the Computer Science degree places emphasis on the scientific progression of speed, fidelity and capability.

Students from both programmes are required to take a portion of coursework in the other school, as well as working together in co-taught electives. The Computer Graphics qualifications are sponsored by the New Zealand Government's Ministry of Science and Innovation, and by local industry partners who are recognized internationally for their work in the Computer Graphics field (Weta Digital, Unlimited Realities and Sidhe). These companies have provided valuable feedback on structure, feasibility and future goals of the programme. They are also committed to supporting the programme in various other ways: with funding, reviewing student work, guest lectures, PhD scholarships and internship possibilities.

Applicants should be both experienced and knowledgeable in cutting edge art/design teaching, research and practice. Areas of expertise should include a creative approach to any number of the following production methods: generative/procedural graphics, animation, generative/procedural 3D, interactive graphics, parameterized design, computer graphics for augmented reality experiences, stereoscopic/3D film production, computer graphics for game design, and/or computer graphics for film/video production. Applicants should also possess a strong working knowledge of related studio practice and all relevant software.

Candidates given preference for the position will hold a Masters or PhD degree (or equivalent) in Media Art/Design with a deep understanding of various programming approaches, or in Computer Science with a deep understanding of Media Art/Design, and who have recognized high quality research achievements and creative outputs in these fields.

When applying please include a covering letter stating why you are applying and why you believe you are qualified for the position, as well as a CV of previous employment, education, publications and awards, a portfolio of your work and/or where applicable, the work of your students and a certified copy of your academic record. (URL's to Web portfolios are preferred).

In New Zealand, Lecturer is equivalent to North American Assistant Professor, and Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor.

National Interest - ArtTrail Festival 2011 - Cork City, Ireland

National Interest
Art Trail Festival 2011

Cork City, Ireland - Friday 18th November - Sunday
4th December

Locations in Cork City, online at arttrail.ie, and
in print in th Irish Examiner on 4th November 2011.

e: arttrail.cork@gmail.co

Festival
Opening Event - Friday 18th November, Art Work Embassy
Venue at The Elysian.

Artists include: Goran Galic & Gian-Reto Gredig (Swz);
Neil Butler (Irl); Kent Gustafsson (Swe); Catherine Harty
(Irl); Alessandro Saviotti & Marianna Liosi (It); Aideen
Doran (NI); Nina Tanis (Irl/USA); Carolyn Collier (Irl); The
Truncated Adjunct Collective; David Upton (Irl), Denise
Kehoe (Irl);

With
economic and political issues to the fore, this year's
ArtTrail Festival turns its attention to National
Interest.
Having posed this theme to the artistic community, the
festival will present selected projects in various venues
across Cork City centre from Friday Nov 18th to Sunday Dec
4th .
The responses reflect concerns of the art world itself  as
well as considering  wider cultural interpretations, uses,
and misuses of these words.

Questions of cultural identity arise as being of interest
or under threat. Many artists are concerned with emblems
of nationhood.  The Declaration of Independence and
Ireland's online identity are broken down and re-presented
in the work of Neil Butler (Irl), while Kent Gustaffson
(Swe) interrogates the symbolism, individuality, and
similarity of national anthems. Others such as Swiss
photographer duo Goran Galic & Gian-Reto Gredig,
Catherine Harty(Irl), and Aideen Doran(Irl) challenge the
authority of news media and self-representation. Through
the prism of the tourist industry in Bosnia, MA BICE BOLJE
/ It'll Get Better by Galic & Gredig examines the
conflict of national interests that leads to war. While
some of these projects touch on the self-reflective nature
of art, others address this area more specifically.
Italian curators Marianna Liosi and Alessandra Saviotti
will chair a panel discussion considering the current
political and economic difficulties, and responses by
artists to this situation.

In seeking to address the interests of the nation the
importance of reaching a wider audience was apparent. This
year's festival programme doubles as a magazine titled
National Interest, with profiles of all the festival
projects and parrallel events, and featuring articles
concerning the issues raised. Writer Rosie Meade and
artist Elaine Garde will consider the position of art as a
cultural commodity within 'Brand Ireland' and alternative
models of social economy respectively. The magazine will
go on national distribution on the 4th of November.

The festival is also concerned with highlighting and
supporting local artistic interests. This year marks a new
departure in how art practitioners and organizations in
the Cork City area are represented. For the first time the
festival will adopt an art fair model entitled Art Work
Embassy. Based on the ground floor of the Elysian
building, Eglington Street, the 'Embassy'  will function
as the hub of the festival and showcase the work of both
individuals and studio groups. An ongoing series of
presentations, artist talks, short workshops, and guided
tours will give an introduction and insight into the
research and motivations of a broad range of artists.
Participants include Outlaw Studios, Backwater Artists
Group, Cork Printmakers, Sample Studios, Golden Section
Studios, Artists on the Hill, Glebe Artists Studios,
National Sculpture Factory, Basement Project Space,
MutantSpace, and many more. The venue will also host the
Festival Opening, and the launch of the JustListen
Showcase CD.

>From micro to macro the festival offers a wide variety
of perspectives to consider.

Further
details of projects, events, and venues will be available
on the ArtTrail website and in the upcoming publication.

The Degenerate Craft Fair 2011, Call for Artists

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:22 PM PDT

We are pleased to announce this year's Degenerate Craft Fair.  It will be held on December 10th and 11th at 159 Bleeker, a three-story gallery space.
The unique premise of our particular fair is that we feature artists who frequently exhibit their work in contexts such as galleries, museums, and retail outlets with artistic focus.  At DCF, our artists offer inexpensive versions of their work, most items being generally $50 or less.  In previous years, DCF has been held at Silent Barn in Ridgewood, 303 Gallery in Williamsburg, BravinLee Gallery in Chelsea, DCTV Firehouse in Tribeca, and now 159 Bleeker in Greenwich Village.
We remain committed to an emphasis on affordable independent professional and alternative art.
To apply for this year's Degenerate Craft Fair and for more information on the fair and becoming a vendor, please visit our website.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Have a student intern work with you! Apply to the Mentorship Project

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 01:28 PM PDT

The word "internship" has an increasingly watered-down meaning. Oftentimes, student interns find themselves doing busy-work for employers as nameless free labor. This occurs both in non-profit and corporate environments. The situation is especially problematic for students interested in pursuing visual art as a career. While gallery and museum internships can offer a view of the administrative side of
visual art, a student interested in learning what exactly is involved in being an artist only gets a second-hand glimpse through a gallery internship. The Mentorship Project is conceived with the conviction that the best way for a student to learn how to develop a professional art practice is through a direct internship with an individual artist. Through this project, artists and students will be selected and paired to work together one-on-one. The student will assist the artist in his or her studio/place of artistic practice.
The Mentorship Project is conceived and organized by Barnard College undergraduate Julia Caston, in conjunction with the Barnard College Centennial Scholars Program and artist Heather Hart. It specifically draws on Barnard students as internship applicants because their current college career resources for visual arts are limited. Caston has worked with multiple artists and arts organizations, and with the help of her mentor, Hart, has helped other students find internships with individual artists since 2010. This project is the next step in what we hope will be an ongoing effort.

St.Paul's Square, Birmingham. B3 1QZ

Jasmin and Helen have been together for a few years and everyone says they're the
perfect couple. Neither of them is able to have kids naturally, so they adopt a child.
The adoption is going well, though not at all as they expected. When Jasmin starts to
get a little too friendly with the child's "birth" aunt, the cradle starts rocking.

This hard hitting, but compassionate play sensitively explores the joys and challenges
of lesbian adoption and parenting.
