The Nutcracker

It says something about the state of entertainment in Britain (TV, radio, DVDs, Sky channels etc.) that nearly 400 people will turn out on a November night to see a group of Russian ballet school students perform The Nutcracker, but hey, what a night it turned out to be!

The Nutcracker

A plethora of Russian companies have toured the west over the last twenty years, some good, some bad and to be frank some absolutely diabolical. But if at the start of the Minsk Academy offering I was expecting a sort of end-of- term school show, with an "oh, what can you expect" kind of performance I was quite wrong as this turned out to be one of the most enjoyable things I've seen for ages.

If for nothing else, it's always worth going to see The Nutcracker just to hear Tchaikovsky's miraculous score. The ballet's a pretty tale, a grand family Christmas Eve party with everyone from grandparents to tiny children sharing the season, featuring entertainment including family dances, conjurers, the mechanical dolls that so fascinated the Victorians, and of course presents around the wonderful tree.

But there's more. The magic of the Nutcracker doll is that it transports Clara to a fantasy world of snowflakes and dancing sweets, and lucky old us get to follow her. This production, especially because of its young, fresh and charming cast took us all on an enchanted journey that truly satisfied, pleased, and truly worked for its almost sell-out crowd.

I can't tell you the names of any of the outstanding dancers as there was no cast list but trust me, there were some very charming young performers here, some very strong leads including the Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy whose final pas de deux was really lovely touches and a trio of enchanting and utterly composed tiny tots who nearly stopped the show.

Do try to see it if you think you deserve a bit of treat that takes you off into a land of charm, elegance, humour and beauty this November. After all, there's nothing much on the telly, is there?

The Nutcracker runs until today (November 19) including a Saturday matinee performance. For tickets phone the box office or go online at www.lichfieldgarrick.com.
