Artist Opportunity: Three-Week Window Festival

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 03:18 AM PDT

Artist Opportunity: Three weeks. One Window. Thousands of people walking past. Lets give them something interesting to look at…

Through their Make.shift scheme, Point Blank Theatre has secured the temporary lease on an empty shop unit in a prime location on New Street, right in the heart of Birmingham's bustling city centre. Local theatre companies Little Earthquake and Tin Box are curating a new festival in the unit between Monday 3rd and Sunday 23rd September 2012 called Three-Week Window.

The shop unit has a large street-level window measuring 5 and a half metres wide by 2 and a half metres tall, and thousands of people walk past it every day. We're looking for up to 18 artists, companies or organisations who would each like to take over the shop window for a single day. Whoever you are, whatever you do, we're keen to hear about ideas that will turn heads and stop people in their tracks for three special weeks in September.

For more information and to download an application form visit:

http://makeshiftbirmingham.wordpress.com/three-week-window/

The deadline for applications is 6pm on Tuesday 21st August 2012. The team will consider all applications, and you'll know if you have a day in the shop window by no later than 6pm on Sunday 26th August.

The location of the shop is 99 New Street, Birmingham (in between Café Rouge and Coventry Building Society).

You can, of course, go and look through the shop window at anytime if you're passing, but if you'd like to have a proper look around or to have a chat to us, we'll be at the shop for two drop-in sessions on Thursday 9th August (between 1pm – 3pm), and Saturday 18th August (between 11am – 1pm). There's no need to book: just pop in and say hello!

We look forward to hearing about your ideas!

Olympic hero Tommy Godwin leads Pedals To Medals at Coventry Transport Museum

Save the date: The Rootless Forest

Posted: 09 Aug 2012 04:40 AM PDT

The Rootless Forest is a mobile artwork, a mini-forest made of real trees and soil planted on a boat that travels at walking pace along the Birmingham and Black Country Canals. From The Rootless Forest we hear recorded stories about adjustment, homecoming and relocation told by two families from the military and UK Afghan communities in Birmingham. The soundscape is a collaboration between artist Beth Derbyshire and voice director Tara McAllister-Viel.  This project asks the question: If the soil beneath our feet shifts, what happens when that foundation shifts and how does our understanding of home alter?

Alongside The Rootless Forest there is an exciting educational and engagement programme titled Offshoots, which is provided by The New Art Gallery Walsall, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, and Sampad. In addition, a series of symposia and artist's talks are being developed under the title Beyond the Pale in partnership with Cathy Wade, Lecturer at BIAD. Beyond the Pale will embrace themes of boundaries and notions of occupation, and will bring artists, curators and galleries together in locations throughout Birmingham and Walsall. A hand-printed newspaper, The Forest Express, will capture and publish themes and ideas associated with the project.

LAUNCH PARTY: SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER, BRINDLEYPLACE, BIRMINGHAM
