Edward III & The Earl of Warwick

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:26 PM PDT

In 1346 The young Earl of Warwick, Lord of Sutton Coldfield, attended King Edward III on a military mission to France. On arrival at Le Hague, they were met by 100 Normans. He immediately embarked with 6 archers and one esquire and after they had killed approx 60 of these Normans, the landing by the King was unopposed. A principal Commander with the Black Prince, he led the 'van' at the Battle of Cressey. Many strong armed lads from Sutton Coldfield drew a bow that day, helping to win for England lasting honour.

He attended the Black Prince again in France, gaining high renown for his valour at the Battle of Poictiers, where the King of France was taken prisoner, he personally took prisoner the archbishop of Sens, gaining an £8000 ransom. The Earl of Warwick was the original founder member of the Knights of the Order of the Garter, instituted by Edward III.

In 1369, Edward again sent an Army to France. Although the French forces outnumbered the English 7-1, they did not attack, and the English commanders delayed sufficiently long enough for a lot of the soldiers to contract the Plague prevalent in France at this time, and began to starve through lack of provisions. Hearing of this, the Earl of Warwick hastened with some picked men to Calais.

The French, no sooner had they heard that the Earl of Warwick had arrived, immediately ordered a full retreat, leaving behind tents and provisions for the English!!! The Earl blamed the English Commanders, he immediately followed the French and lay waste to the isle of Caen. However, he contracted the plague and died.
