Straw Plaiting with Veronica Main


Saturday 8th September, 10am – 4.30pm


A rare opportunity to learn the craft of straw plaiting with straw-work artist Veronica Main.  Our one day course will offer milliners, textile artists, teachers, historians and anyone with an interest in heritage crafts an insight into this largely forgotten technique.  Participants will learn about techniques used to produce hats and how to make straw plait.  This is an exciting opportunity to help preserve this heritage craft.


Part of our programme of Heritage Craft events, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.


Free of charge, all materials are provided.  Booking required as places are limited.

Spoon Carving with Martin Damen

Sunday 30th September, 9am – 5pm


Work with traditional woodworker Martin Damen to explore green woodworking.  This one day course is an opportunity to learn more about tradtitional tools and techniques while creating your own unique spoon.

Drawing and Painting with Sally Bostock


Mondays: 17th September – 10th December, 10am – 12noon


During these autumn sessions, the group will be focussing on expanding their drawing and colour skills.  Drawing from life in a variety of media such as graphite, charcoal and pen and ink will be explored and every session is prefaced with a group discussion, short exercises or exploration of a technique or medium, followed by their own project work.  Resources needed: your chosen materials.  



Advanced Watercolour – The Grand Union Art Group with Sally Bostock


Mondays: 17th September – 10th December, 1pm – 3.30pm


This is a long-term group of experienced and explorative water-colourists.  Participants in this group are discovering and developing their own styles with a very exciting medium and they are also using a variety of other media with their watercolours.  The sessions begin with a group discussion, followed by gestural drawing and project work.  Artists are encouraged to work through studies for composition and colour, leading to a final piece. 


 


Jewellery with Clare Layton


Mondays: 17th September – 10th December, 1pm – 3pm


Project-based Jewellery – this course offers you the option to make an item of your choice, working with the tutor to create a piece of Jewellery, learning as you go.  This course is appropriate for complete beginners, or more advanced students who wish to develop their skills.  Consumables such as saw blades and some silver and solder can be purchased from the tutor.


 


Drawing with Sarah Wright


Tuesdays: 18th September – 10th December, 1pm – 3pm


Basic drawing – if you want to draw, this class offers you the basic looking and drawing skills to find the confidence to apply yourself at your own place.  Open to individuals with little or no experience and those wanting to improve. 


 


Pottery with Kirsteen Holuj


Tuesdays: 18th September – 10th December, 1pm – 3pm


This course is aimed at beginners and also for those with some experience.  For beginners we will cover all the basic making techniques so that you can gain confidence to  design and complete your own projects.  These include slab work, coiling, decoration and glazing.  There will also be the opportunity to have a go on the potters wheels.  For more advanced students you will be encouraged to come to class with lots of ideas and I will help you to complete your designs to a high standard.


 


Tuesday Social


Tuesdays: 18th September – 11th December, 7pm – 8pm (no need to book, just drop by!)


Tuesday Social, hosted by the Drawing Machine, is a new and exciting forum for creative minds to exchange their views on current and trending issues that surface, a space to question, respond and react, and in the process, generate artwork.  A weekly gathering of like-minded individuals who want to be challenged and inspired, an opportunity to explore and experiment.  Join us with your thoughts, bring your tools to apply yourself and enjoy homemade soup and a drink. This is a drop-in session so please pay on arrival.  Resources needed: your chosen materials.  


 


Pottery with Mark Compton 


Tuesdays: 18th September – 11th December, 7.30pm – 9.30pm


Join this course to have a go at making beautiful, creative objects out of clay.  Various making and decorating techniques will be explored through a series of small projects during this course – learn something new or develop your skills in pottery.  One evening will be spent throwing pots on the potters’ wheel.  Tools are provided, a small additional charge will be made for clay and firing.


 


Creative Lettering with Cindy Wonnacott


Wednesdays: 19th September - 12th December, 10am – 12noon


This Course is re -connecting design & lettering breaking away from the pen.  We will look at drawing & design for carving, use of resists, masks, photocopier, unconventional tools and writing surfaces – an experimental approach to lettering.  In the words of Hermann Zapf  ‘the hand will always have its own distinctive & lively expression, so to train the hand  and broaden our skills is a way to compete with the many electronic facilities around us,not only to defend artistic creativity but also to keep control of the new technologies.’  Suitable for all levels and particularly those who already have an established interest or need to use lettering in their work.  Resources needed: HB pencils & sketch pad A4 for the first session any other materials can be purchased after we meet in the first session.


 


Life Drawing with Sarah Wright


Thursdays: 20th September – 13th December, 10am - 12noon


A tutored life drawing session for all abilities offering the beginner an opportunity to learn new drawing skills and build their confidence and the more experience the chance to develop their skills and explore new ways of applying themselves.  Each week this popular class begins with some quick warm-up drawings, followed by one or two longer poses, models are both male and female and very experienced.  


 


First Saturdays


First Saturday of each Month, 10am – 12noon


Come along to Artworks MK on the first Saturday of the month for a taster session in ceramics, printmaking or silver-smithing.  Meet our friendly tutors and have a go at something new – this is a chance to get your hands dirty and make something.  If you enjoy one of our First Saturday sessions you might want to book on to one of our longer courses.  Please book in advance as places are limited.

Using a Polaroid camera and transfer equipment local photographer Frazer Waller will take you through the steps to making your own experimental artworks on anything from wood, metal, stone, or paper. Come along and get creative with photography.

Sun Printing with Anthony CarrSaturday 22 September / 1 - 3pm / Free

Suitable for children aged 4+

Using nothing but a mix of objects and the sun, this session will explore how you can draw with light. Come along and create pictures using anything from flowers to lego and discover some new techniques to create original works of art.
