Former military bases on film

Greetings and Happy New Year to everyone from your film/theatre/TV programme researcher. I must get my sundial fixed in order to keep up with new postings;)

Although the location is a bit outside our Midlands area,the opportunity arises to point members towards a showing on BBC TV this weekend of a Second World War film (filmed during the last days of the War) which had the the historic kudos of being filmed at a location which was at the time itself being decommissioned (as far as in-the-air purposes were concerned).

The Way to the Stars (dir. Anthony Asquith, 1945) and showing on BBC 2 on Sunday, 19 August at 2.25pm was filmed at the then RAF Catterick in Yorkshire prior to and during its conversion from an operational air base to a ground-only training centre, and which is today known as Marne Barracks. The Churchill wartime Government had every confidence that a peace declaration regarding Germany was only weeks away when the film crews were given filming permission and Catterick was the very first most likely to end its operational days before the War had concluded.

The opening of the March 1945 film shows Catterick in its then immediate dereliction and would have been a formidable explorers venue had it remained today in its featured condition.
