Godiva Awakes - arrival 1st of August!

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 02:19 AM PDT

This is a really exciting national project and should be a great event for MK, coming right after IF: Milton Keynes International Festival and Milton Keynes Festival Fringe.

If you haven't heard, Godiva is a 10m high puppet making her way from Coventry to London being powered by a team of 100 cyclists on a special contraption known as a cyclopaed.  She is one of the Cultural Olympiad projects.

En route she is seeking overnight refuge and Milton Keynes will welcome her on 1 August.  The programme is as follows:

4.30 pm-8.00 pm:          Cultural festival with live music and workshops by MK Gallery

5.00 pm:                       Godiva arrives

5.30 pm-6.00 pm           New performance of Festive Road's 'Brewing Up'

8.00 pm:                       The Great British Prom with Milton Keynes City Orchestra and a spectacular finale

Godiva will leave the festivities during the concert and make her way to Midsummer Place where she will stay overnight.  Next morning there will be a business breakfast in Pret a Manger with guest speakers and the chance to view Godiva really close up.

And all this is FREE!

Festive Road 'Brewing 'UP' to welcome Godiva Awakes!

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 04:57 AM PDT

PRESS RELEASE

Campbell Park will be the venue for locally based Festive Road to present its newly devised and 2012 touring show ‘Brewing Up’ this Wednesday. Already performed in Northampton and Oxford as part of the Cultural Olympiad celebrations, this outdoor participatory touring show has been two years in development.

If you think you've seen ‘Brewing Up’ before, then prepare to be refreshed! The show depicts, with humour, so me of the truths and bizarre traditions that surround our nation’s great tea drinking obsession. It is a mix of masquerading mayhem and surreal invention.

Scheduled for 5.30pm on Wednesday 1 August on the plateau in Campbell Park 'Brewing Up' will be just one of the programmed events set to welcome Godiva Awakes to Milton Keynes and add that Festive Road magic to the celebrations. Also welcoming Lady Godiva will be Festive Road’s ‘giant puppets’ featured in last weekend’s ‘Walking with Giants’ parade.

Picture of Proms in the Park The much loved Proms in the Park is making a triumphant return to Campbell Park on Wednesday 1st August at 8pm, after an absence of several years. For the first time ever, the event will be absolutely free! The amazing concert, performed by Milton Keynes City Orchestra and conducted by its founder, Hilary Davan Wetton, should be further music to people’s ears.

The traditional prom featuring stirring musical favourites, such as Pomp and Circumstance, will end in blazing style with a firework and light display, which has been generously sponsored by Handelsbanken.

Julie Dawes, Events Coordinator at The Parks Trust, said: “This is a must see event for all the family and we’re thrilled that Milton Keynes City Orchestra will be performing this special concert for us. We’re very grateful to Handelsbanken for sponsoring the grand finale, which should bring proceedings to a spectacular close.”

Derek Bell, Branch Manager of Handelsbanken Milton Keynes, said: “We are very pleased to be able to support and to be associated with putting this great event back on the social calendar of Milton Keynes.”

Proms in the Park is part of Milton Keynes Summer of Culture 2012 and is the culmination of 11 hours of free family entertainment in Campbell Park, starting with MK Playday and followed by a cultural festival to celebrate the visit from the Cultural Olympiad project, Godiva Awakes.

Life Drawing Workshop @ The Stani Studios

Posted: 24 Jun 2012 11:13 AM PDT

A workshop by Hannah Thomas for artists of any level. Small and intimate allowing plenty of one to one tuition and guidance……but it will also suit someone who prefers to explore their own ideas and vision.

The day will begin with a brief discussion about materials and equipment followed by a series of short warm-up poses allowing you to familiarise yourself with the shape and form of the model. As the day progresses the poses will get longer allowing you to capture more detail.  The afternoon will be spent working on just one pose and giving more time to think about composition and choice of materials. Throughout the day guidance and help will be on hand and at the end of the session an open critique will be encouraged to allow you to see each others work and discuss it.

The life drawing workshop is all about spontaneous responses to the model and the pose, the lighting and the space, and the overall ambiance of the environment.  It is never about capturing a perfect representation but about seeing and translating and making marks…….and of course, to have some fun with creativity!

The workshop will ;
• offer guidance and tuition in life drawing skills
• explore different mark-making techniques.
•  explore the use of mediums.
•  look at style and composition.
•  encourage skill sharing amongst artists.
• promote creativity and freedom of expression.

Duration :  10 – 4 pm   Cost :  £ 85 per person inc light lunch
