Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme Open Fund

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 10:02 AM PST

From 23 July – 3 August 2014, Glasgow will host the XX Commonwealth Games, one of the world's most significant multi-sports events.

Glasgow 2014 will be Scotland's largest ever combined sporting and cultural celebration, and the vision is to stage an outstanding Games that will be celebrated at home and across the Commonwealth. As an integral part of an unforgettable Commonwealth Games experience, we have the ambition to stage and support a truly spectacular and surprising programme of cultural events that will bring the Commonwealth to Scotland and take Scotland to the Commonwealth.

Glasgow 2014 Limited, Creative Scotland and Glasgow Life are now inviting individuals and organisations to apply to the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme Open Fund.

This fund is a major component in the development of the nationwide Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme and aims to enhance the Games experience for Scotland's communities, spectators and visitors, as well as present the best of Scotland's culture alongside that of the Commonwealth.

A total of £4million is available and individual artists, community-led groups and arts organisations are invited to apply for awards ranging from £20,000 up to £300,000.

Projects can be new and one-off events or enhancements of an existing festival or programme of work. They can feature in either or both the Scotland-wide programme Culture 2014 – which will focus on the countdown to the Games before the focus subsequently turns to other major events, such as the Ryder Cup and the Edinburgh Festivals – and Festival 2014, which will transform Glasgow during Games-time.

Further details on the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme and other opportunities, along with background information on the Games, and full guidelines on how to apply to the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme Open Fund can be found on the Creative Scotland website.

Applications close on Friday 22 February 2013.

Christmas in a Day – new Kevin Macdonald film

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 09:57 AM PST

Not strictly theatre, but storytelling/gathering all the same:

Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland, Life in a Day, Marley) is asking filmmakers to take part in "Christmas In A Day." Find a character with a story or tell your own story, all submissions are welcome.
Visit www.christmasinaday.co.uk for more details.

From Kevin Macdonald:

"I want to document not just the big day itself but the process leading up to it – getting the tree, travelling to relatives, picking presents etc.

I would like the film to be comprised of as much variety as possible, of truth and beauty, happiness and sadness, the mundane and the extraordinary, to creating a lasting record of this time. It would be wonderful to reach hospitals, the homeless, families, everything that is going on.

I'm assembling the same team behind LIFE IN A DAY and BRITAIN IN A DAY and if you would like be involved, we would love to see your footage.

The finished film will premiere in time for NEXT Christmas – 2013 and contributors will be invited to attend the premiere and get to meet Kevin and his team.

Also, as Sainsburys are sponsoring the project, we are able to offer a little incentive. If your footage is included in the finished film you will receive £200 in Sainsburys vouchers.

I can't wait to see your footage.
Kevin

Box of Frogs seeks new collaborators

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 09:55 AM PST

Jon Trevor of Box of Frogs Impro is looking to pull together a tight group of improvisers who want to commit to gigging regularly and frequently, and who are happy to travel to do so.   In the shorter term that will mean performing support spots on the comedy circuit, but leading eventually to headlining, and presenting full shows both in comedy clubs and in theatres.

To be part of this, you should be an Improviser with performance experience, or a performer willing to get up to speed quickly with strong Improv skills, who is willing to commit to this as a longer-term project, and ready to do the groundwork needed to build an audience and a reputation. Ideally Midlands-based, or willing to travel to rehearse.

Also looking for a musician who plays a portable instrument (guitar/keyboards/something else?) wanting to work with an Improv group on the same basis – or, of course, improvisers who also play an instrument.

If you are interested in this project, please contact Jon Trevor at jon@boxoffrogsimpro.co.uk

New pub theatre in Leicester seeks work

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 09:50 AM PST

Leicester based theatre company Off the Fence (OtF) is undertaking a project to convert a popular Leicester pub into a permanent theatre space. A temporary conversion occurred in October and accommodated a four night run of a new play. OtF is now organising a month of varied performances to test audience appetite for work by other companies and looking to hear from anyone interested in performing in the space. The work should be ready to perform in March/April and artists be prepared to work under a box-split.

The space seats up to 70 people end-on or 60 in traverse, currently with limited wing space and a stage of about 20 square yards (small, but the same size as RSC's Other Space and The Warehouse).

If you are interested in exploring the possibility of performing during the pilot month please contact OtF's Executive Producer Verity Bartesch on vb@off-the-fence.com.

Yesterday our young people's group A Colourful Crowd went on the first of two Jewellery Masterclasses at Birmingham School of Jewellery. Inspired by the current Hirst exhibition, the group learnt new techniques and skills and all went away with something which they made!

Jewellery Masterclasses Wednesday 5th December 2012
A Colourful Crowd organised a brilliant trip to the Birmingham School of Jewellery participating in the first of two Introduction to Jewellery Masterclasses. It was great to see what can be learnt and achieved in just three hours. We cannot wait until next week!
