Learn the Basics of Silversmithing at Artworks MK

This spring Artworks MK are offering several opportunities to learn the basics of silversmithing and jewellery making. 


Introduction to Jewellery with Clare Layton - Mondays: 1pm – 3pm (£145)


This is a 10-week course beginning 14th January 2013, which has been designed to introduce participants to the techniques and tools of jewellery making. 


 


Silver Basics Workshop: Make a Ring and a Pendant with Karen McKinley - Saturday 16th February, 10am – 4pm (£65) & this workshop will be repeated Saturday 23rd March, 10am - 4pm (£65)


Make a silver ring and a leaf imprinted silver pendant in this friendly saturday workshop.  Price includes the cost of materials.

Drawing at Artworks MK

We are offering several drawing classes at Artworks MK this Spring.  Our programme includes Life Drawing courses and a beginners course to develop skills that you may have forgotten, or to nurture those just starting out with drawing.


 


Basic Drawing with Sarah Wright - Tuesdays: 1pm – 3pm (£100) 


Basic drawing – if you want to draw, this class offers you the basic looking and drawing skills to find the confidence to apply yourself at your own place.  Open to individuals with little or no experience and those wanting to improve.


 


Evening Life Drawing with Sarah Wright - Wednesdays: 7pm - 9pm (£145) 


A tutored life drawing session for all abilities offering the beginner an opportunity to learn new drawing skills and build their confidence and the more experience the chance to develop their skills and explore new ways of applying themselves.  Each week this popular class begins with some quick warm-up drawings, followed by one or two longer poses, models are both male and female and very experienced.

Our Spring courses will run for 10 weeks with a break for the February half term w/c 18th Feb. 


Courses will start w/c 14th January and finish w/c 25th March.

Heritage Craft Inspired Workshops

At Artworks MK this Spring we are offering an exciting range of Heritage Craft Inspired Workshops.  These workshops provide the perfect opportunity to try something new or make a hand-made gift.


Spoon Carving with Martin Damen (£70) - 19th January, 9am – 5pm


Spoon carving is a very accessible and affordable traditional craft. Few tools are required and the timber commonly used is readily available.  Learn from a professional spoon maker, how to hand-carve a traditional wooden spoon. This course covers the whole process from splitting a log with an axe, through to carving a spoon using the axe, a straight carving knife and a spoon carving hook knife.


 


Willow Fish for Children with Ruth Salter (£17) - 2nd February, 2 sessions: 10am – 12noon and 1pm – 3pm


These sessions have been designed for children and their carers to make Fish from willow.


 


Willow Basket in a Day with Maggie Smith (£55) - 9th February, 10am – 4pm


This willow-basket making course is suitable for beginners.  During the day you will learn the traditional skills necessary to make a small round willow basket for holding fruit, bread, eggs or knitting projects.  The side handles are optional and may be added if time allows.

Whittling with Martin Damen (£55) - 16th March, 10am – 4pm


Learn the traditional pastime from a professional green woodworker.  No previous experience is required as the course starts by covering the safe and efficient use fo the knife.  Students are then guided through making a number of items using readily available wood.

Lace-Making, Stitch and Basket Making Workshops

Our Heritage Craft inspired workshops offer participants the chance to learn new skills, or to develop their knowledge of a craft or art form that has its roots in traditional practice. 


Willow Basket in a Day with Maggie Smith (£55) - 9th February, 10am – 4pm

Bobbin-Lace Rush Mat Workshop with Ruth Salter (£60) - 23rd February, 10am – 4pm


 


Beginners Contemporary Lace-Making with Louise West (£55) - 2nd March, 10am – 4pm


This workshop will be split into 2 parts with the morning apent learning the two stitches of bobbin lace making and the afternoon making a lace friendship bracelet.  All the equipment and materials will be provided.  All participants will go away with the basic knowledge, a finished and information for continuing with this historical craft.


 


Cloth of Stitch Day School with Beth Walsh (£45) - 9th March, 10am – 4pm


Learn how to develop basic needlelace stitches into exciting fabrics including contrasts of texture, colour and medium. The workshop enables participants, of whatever experience of needlelace techniques, to make a new, innovative fabric of stitch, perhaps with found objects or at a scale not usually associated with lace.


 


Advanced Contemporary Lace-Making with Louise West (£55) - 16th March, 10am – 4pm


The day will start with a short talk and discussion as to what contemprary lace is, with some of the tutor’s experiences in the field on display.  The students will then work on a piece of lace of their own choice, either from a supplied pattern, or with assistance their own design for a piece of contemporary lace jewellery.  Students are encouraged to bring their own threads (you can use anything that can be wound onto a bobin) and all the usual lace-making equipment*.  This workshop is very much about exploring something new, with guidance throughout the process.


*It is expected that each student will bring along their own equipment for the class.  Advice can be given if contact is made prior to the class.
