Engine House’s “Two Little Boys” in Nottingham

Throughout December Nottingham based theatre company Engine House are showcasing their latest production, Two little Boys at Lakeside Arts Theatre. Inspired by the 1969 song sung by Rolf Harris, the story looks back on the friendship of two boys from the perspective of them as grown men.

The adaptation is set around the 1900′s and sees a class divide with the boys growing up in the same house, with one under stairs and one above. Their lifelong friendship is challenged along with way with illness and breakages, yet the bond is strong as World War One sees them both in their different ways called for service. The set is simply, yet perfectly, designed and accompanied with the fantastic acting and music and great effects it is engaging and magical. Throughout the play there is humour and as children love seeing adults being silly so there are lots of giggles and gasps from them combined with more poignant moments. The Christmas theme runs through the story making it a perfect heart warming treat for all the family at this time of year.

In addition to the stage production, an area of the Arts Centre has been created into an interactive exhibition for children, designed by children at Dunkirk Primary School in the city along with artist Jessica Kemp. Included in this are hobby horses made and decorated by Year One children, accompanied by hand made apples and carrots for hungry horses! As well as the horses are plenty of other toys including wigwam play den, play kitchen, train set and bed. This works really well and children can have great fun in this fantastic area.

The plan is for the production to tour nationally in 2014 in conjunction with the 100 years anniversary of WW1 so make sure you see it first whilst it is in Nottingham!

The show runs until 30 December 2012 and all tickets are £8. It is suitable for children and adults aged 4+.
