Call Out: Writer in Residence

In Between Time International Festival of Performance: 14-17 Feb 2013

In Between Time, in partnership with Live Art UK, is looking for a Writer in Residence to live with
us over IBT13 – an extraordinary weekend of theatre, live art, dance, opera, feasts, talks, parties
and public art.

Artists from all over the world fill four days with unique events, new commissions and premiers.
Over 50 artworks spill out from leading art spaces and into the city's docksides, urban glades, and
alleyways. IBT13 features artists set to change the face of performance: the visionaries, the young
bloods, the wild-cards and the one-offs.

We are looking for a writer keen to express the intangible, critically digest the performances they
experience and share their insights and the stories with a group of emerging writers and a wider
audience across the UK and abroad. As well as offering their own writing, the writer in residence
will lead, organize and inspire a small group of up to 5 emerging student writers throughout the
festival.

We are looking for a writer who:
• is UK based; with past experience of writing and has had some work published;
• is passionate and informed about performance, its development, its mavericks and its current
and future audiences;
• able to write both critically and accessibly;
• able to access publication in inter/national online and print journals, newspapers and/or other
publications of writing;
• able to lead and inspire 5 emerging writers.

We offer:
• A Festival Pass to the entire IBT13 programme across 4 days;
• A fee of £650, travel costs within the UK, and accommodation over the festival period;
• The extensive distribution of your writing in a free downloadable pdf by the Live Art UK network
and others.

You offer:
• a response to IBT13 in writing; including 3 key themes – Artificial Hells: Live art and
participation; To The Future: Supporting artist development; Forest Floor to City Street: Live art
and the public realm;
• The potential publication of your writing in int/national online and print journals, newspapers
and/or other publications of writing;
• Inspirational ideas and mentorship to be shared with the group of 5 young writers.

Writer Bursary available from Tamasha Theatre

With the support of the The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Tamasha Theatre are offering a bursary to a writer to run workshops with a range of local community groups, and to develop a new creative response around the themes of their latest production The Arrival.

The commissioned artist should have experience of working with communities on participatory creative projects, with a particular focus on those from BAME and refugee or other disadvantaged backgrounds. The artist will be expected to devise a participatory workshop programme and then deliver an agreed number of workshops between March and April 2013 in the following venues, on or around the dates noted:

Nuffield Theatre, Southampton (w/b 18th March 2013)
B2, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry (w/b 25th March 2013)
York Theatre Royal (2nd and 3rd April 2013)
Northern Stage, Newcastle (5th and 6th April 2013)
Jacksons Lane, London (w/b 8th April 2013)

It is anticipated that there will a maximum of 15 workshops in total, spread across the venues noted above. Workshops can be delivered solely by the commissioned artist, or there is capacity to bring in additional artist(s) to work alongside the commissioned (lead) artist. The workshops should explore some of the themes of The Arrival, and may act as research and development or be part of the final written work.  The commissioned artist will be responsible for the full organisation of the workshops, in collaboration with the venues and will have overall management responsibility for delivering this programme of work.

As part of the bursary the selected artist will also benefit from being able to observe the rehearsals for The Arrival, which run from 25th February to 16th March in London.

The final piece of work should be a new short piece of creative writing, which will be presented visually on Tamasha's online gallery. There may also be an opportunity to hold a reading of the new piece as part of one of Tamasha's regular Scratch Nights during 2013-14. The work needs to be completed no later than 31 May 2013.

We are looking for artists who:
•    have some experience of working with young people or those from a BAMER background
•    who wish to develop their experience of participatory arts further.
•    hold a valid and up to date CRB license, or are prepared to apply for one.

The fee for the writing bursary is £1500 all-inclusive. This should cover artist fees and all other associated costs.

The fee for devising and delivering the workshops will be £100 per day (for each of the artists involved in delivering the workshops), up to a maximum of £1500, with an additional sum of £500 allocated to cover travel and other expenses (including the cost of the CRB checking process if this is required).

How to apply:
Expressions of interest will be judged against the artist's experience and/or quality of work shown in working in public contexts, creative public engagement and level of innovation within their practice.
Applicants should send a written proposal (maximum of 1000 words). This should include:
•    a description and outline of the proposed work, your creative process and the innovative approach you would bring to the commission
•    your experience of working with groups as well as the potential groups you would be interested in working with, brief timeline and initial budget breakdown. Please also indicate if you would like to work with other TDA artists in the delivery of the workshops or if you intend to run these by yourself.

the idea of 'diversity' in 2013

What does it mean to be diverse?

What does diverse work look/ feel/ sound like?

What are the expectations of diverse work and how do you feel about them?

Are some kinds of 'diverse' more recognised than others?

How do you feel about the word 'diverse' coming before the word 'artist'?

If 'diverse' means 'different', then how can 'diverse' be a grouping?

Who gets to decide who is 'diverse'?

What makes work diverse – people or practice?

What is the relationship between diversity and radical politics?

What does diversity mean for form?

and

How can you make a piece of theatre about all this which will be theatrically exciting?

 

Over the last 50 years, artists too radical, too different, too unfamiliar for the mainstream have found a home at Ovalhouse. But as the mainstream evolves and the language changes, we want to make sure that we are continuing to support what has come to be called diversity. And we want you, the artists loosely grouped under the flag of diversity, to help us to do this – by making a piece of work which in some way responds to the questions we are asking ourselves, those questions which appear above.

 

We're asking you to start with ideas but your story, your visuals, how you respond to the space, the experience you give the audience is equally important. We are asking you to experiment with these ideas in a dramatic context. Your process might start with text or movement or a collaboration or something else.

 

WHAT WE WANT

Artists/ companies

•       who want to create a new piece of work inspired by ideas and questions concerned with 'diversity'

•       whose work only works in a live environment

•       who want to inhabit and transform a large space

 

WHAT YOU GET

•       3 weeks in a rehearsal room: 20 May – 8 June 2013

•       3 weeks in a fully equipped performance space: 10 – 29 June 2013 (part of the Summer Season at Ovalhouse)

•       20 hrs tech support

•       40% box office takings

•       inclusion in Ovalhouse brochure (10,000 copies)

•       admin space and marketing support

•       dramaturgical support

•       £13,000 commissioning contribution to your budget

•       £2,000 producer fee

Call for expressions of interest: Kindle Theatre is seeking a producer!

Emily, Sam and Olivia at Kindle are calling for expressions of interest from those working in the theatre/live art/performance/cross-genre sectors to act as their producer with the possibility of securing a long-term position with the company.
Kindle has been making provocative and passionate theatre with rigour and intelligence since 2005, and 2013 will be their 8th year of self-producing. As the company continues to grow and shift we recognise that although we have a wealth of experience in creating work, we are in need of extra support in the following areas :
-   long-term Grants for the Arts application (to be submitted Feb 2013)*
- strategic planning and time-management
- sniffing out exciting new locations / festivals / partners for our work
- company management
- tour-booking (UK and International) and sales
- fundraising
- some general admin/project management
* We are initially seeking somebody who will work with us to submit a large GFA application which will support the company's work through 2013 and into 2014. The fee of £1000(tbc) is available for this initial consultancy work/trial period, with a view to the producer writing their future fees into the application should the collaboration feel positive and natural on both parts.
Kindle is seeking someone positive, hardworking, experienced but daring, with excellent planning, budgeting and strategic skills and a wicked sense of humour. We are open to receiving applications from individuals working within and outside the West Midlands, and will consider all levels of experience. Workshops into Performance

We're just putting out the call for the next round of NTI Workshops into Performance starting in January – just the thing to dust off that Christmas induced inertia! – details below.

This is a course that brings Actors/Writers/Directors together to produce fresh invigorating new Theatre. Those who attended the previous Workshops have benefited enormously, and many are already enrolling again on this course.

There are currently spaces available for Actors, so if you want to get the new year off to a great start, make sure you get your application in soon – closing date is 22nd December.

Using this as our theme for this course, we will create new pieces of Theatre.

Brecht meets Meisner

Taking as our inspiration the work of Bertolt Brecht and Sanford Meisner.

In these Workshops we will explore the effect of Alienation in Brecht

and how using Meisner helps Actors fire the lines of a play.

From out of all this we will create a play for and about Birmingham  . . .

The NTI (New Theatre Initiative) Scheme is a new series of workshops for actors, writers and directors run by Frank Bramwell of inamoment, in association with the Old Joint Stock Theatre, aimed at stimulating the creation of new theatre in Birmingham. Each five-session run of workshops, a mix of study and collaboration, will culminate in a showcase night of full performances of the newly created works at the OJST, and from the best of these Workshop performances it is hoped full-scale production runs will emerge.

In each Workshop there will be opportunities for everyone to learn new ways of approaching their particular Theatre craft, and to then use those skills to jointly create direct Theatre. Whether people are relatively inexperienced or not, the team ethos of these Workshops encourages everyone to participate to the best of their ability.

The attractive package of support the OJST are offering all work which comes through the NTI scheme (including discounted Theatre rental rates) means that at last a full creation cycle for new plays will be an on-going and real opportunity for all Actors, Writers, Directors, and Theatre Creatives in the region.

Hodgson of Old Joint Stock Theatre, we have both felt for many years that Birmingham has lacked a way of stimulating the creation of Theatre that results directly in actual performances, and that bringing together Writers, Actors and Directors is where it all starts. We are greatly encouraged by the first round of NTI Workshops, already plans are now being made to stage a new NTI work in the New Year."

£12 for each Workshop / £50 for all 5 Workshops.
