A challenge to writers and theatre-makers

Posted: 14 Dec 2012 05:34 AM PST

Playwright Fin Kennedy has been issued a challenge by Culture Minister Ed Vaizey to let the government know how the cuts are affecting the production of new plays. He is asking writers and theatre-makers to pool resources and gather information about what is happening across the country. E.g. evidence that theatres are:

  • Producing fewer new plays overall
  • Programming plays by household name writers rather than those less well-known
  • Having fewer writers on attachment or in-residence
  • Offering fewer full commissions
  • Cutting back on literary department staff
  • Cutting back on education or youth work
  • Reassigning dramaturgical functions to associate directors rather than literary staff
  • Programming musicals, comedy or revivals in slots where new plays would once have played
  • Going dark for a few weeks
  • Putting plays on for shorter runs
  • Winding up writers' groups or other developmental schemes
  • Limiting actor workshop time on new plays in development
  • Having to give notes to writers primarily driven by cost – such as smaller cast size
  • Offering fewer playwriting workshops to beginners, or to the general public

The End of the Year…

Posted: 14 Dec 2012 05:25 AM PST

Dear Theatre Goers

We hope that you have had a great year of theatre visits.
We were hoping to hold an almost glitzy awards ceremony fuelled by people's nominations from their "I lIke Theatre" pledgecards. However, as we have not had many of these we can't really justify that …  but we would like to invite you to the annual "Theatre-Ish" Christmas party at the Stan's Cafe venus @AE Harris.
The party is on Wednesday 19th December from 8 o'clock. There will be a bar and dancing and mingling. If you haven't been to AE Harris before be warned that it is an old factory and can be a bit chilly –  so dress less to impress more to keep warm.
@AE Harris is on 110 Northwood Street, Birmingham B3 1SZ, (near St Paul's Square in the Jewellery Quarter)
Let us know if you can make it by emailing: register@iliketheatre.co.uk
Have a great Christmas

Introducing Iain Armstrong composer / sound designer / location sound recordist

Posted: 14 Dec 2012 05:18 AM PST

Dear Midpoint Members

Please allow me to introduce myself:
I am a Birmingham based composer who specialises in the use of found sounds and location recordings to create experimental music and sound art. I am currently looking for work as a theatre sound designer / composer.
My work spans soundscape composition, multi-channel sound installation, radiophonic works, electroacoustic concert music and sound design for theatre, sound effects, soundtracks etc. I'm interested in collaborative/devised working methods and in addition to composing for fixed media I also perform live. My live work usually involves a combination of triggering recorded sounds, sampling live sound, manipulating and mixing this material. This approach can be used as a quick way to explore and develop ideas, generating material for later composition or performance.
Perhaps you are looking for some bespoke sound effects, an immersive soundscape or ambient recordings that you can't find from the stock suppliers? Maybe you'd like some incidental music or atmospheres? Do you need someone to help you develop and realise more complex ideas about the integration of sound into your production?
Whether you are at the devising stage and want to experiment, need a couple of sounds recorded or have a detailed list of your sound design requirements I'd be happy to hear from you and discuss your ideas. You can contact me at info@phonoscope.co.uk
Examples of my work and further information is available at the links below:
Thank you

Peter Pan
by J.M. Barrie
The timeless story of a boy who would not grow up. The story begins in the London nursery of Wendy, John, and Michael Darling, where the three children are visited by Peter Pan.  With the help of his tiny friend, the fairy Tinkerbell, Peter takes the three children on a magical flight to Never Land.  This enchanted island is home to Peter, Tink, the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily, her Native American nation, and the scheming Captain Hook.  Peter Pan and the Lost Boys are engaged in an on-going conflict with Captain Hook and his pirates.  Hook is as intent on defeating Peter Pan as he is from escaping the tick-tocking crocodile that once ate a hand of his and has pursued him ever since.Group discounts are available for parties of 10 and above, please call for details.

Collective Unconscious new event Dark Clouds

Posted: 14 Dec 2012 05:09 AM PST

Collective Unconscious are an immersive theatre company creating live art encounters that allow participants to explore sensuous modes of being through the adoption of new identities and co-creation of novel forms of social interaction. Our aim is to share and build, never to alienate, ridicule or destroy, so whilst our provocations may be challenging and thought provoking, we always hold the participant in the highest esteem.

Dark Clouds is an installation, an exhibition and a performative exploration, centred round the metaphorical interpretation of darkness and set in a world with no natural light. Each day we will be presenting different performances for adults and, at times also for families, that explore the theme of darkness from different perspectives. There will be interactive performances, storytelling, and visual and installation art. The performances (held between midday and 4.30) will be different every single day and so visitors should feel free to return as often as they wish.

Please show us the courage to visit and interact. You will enjoy what you find…We will be waiting.

Between the 6th and 22nd of December, Collective Unconscious invite you to come and spend some time with us.  The event is free but donations are welcome.

The installation will be open between 10:30-16.30 with performances from midday at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum (old library building), Foregate Street, Worcester.

Join us at: www.facebook.com/collectiveunconsciousuk for the live programme of events)
