| Former Raleigh employees put on Raleigh play Posted: 25 May 2012 04:19 AM PDT
The Raleigh Players are putting on a show that tells the story of the factory where so many people in Nottingham worked over so many years. Some say it's lace that made Nottingham, and some say Robin Hood, but everyone across the world has heard of a Raleigh bicycle. People from countries you've probably never even heard of will be riding Raleighs at this very moment. And it's the people here in Nottingham that made them. A Lifetime Guarantee is a lively show, full of films and fun and people from across all ages. Some of the footage has never been seen before and some of it will remind you of what it was like to work at the factory, whatever 'Shop' (or department) you were in. If you're interested in the history of where you live, or are someone who likes cycling, or of course, someone who used to work at Raleigh, you're very welcome to attend. All shows are FREE and no tickets required (first come, first served duck!) with the exception of the Nottingham Playhouse show on Monday 11th June. Tickets for this show are available from the Nottingham Playhouse at £2.50. Call 0115 941 9419 or visit www.nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk to book. Free shows are:

| Here be Monsters: The Monster Machine by Nicola L. Robinson Posted: 01 Jun 2012 09:40 AM PDT
We caught up with Nicola to ask her a few questions about her illustration and her inspiration for her monsters… Tell us a bit about yourself. I'm a freelance illustrator and have been since I graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Cardiff school of Art and Design. I moved to Nottingham a few years ago, and have settled here with my partner Gareth. I love Nottingham, it's a fantastic city. I am a huge fan of Tom Waits, and love blues music. I also love cooking and grow garlic and habanero chillies. And I don't have any pets, but I do have bonsai trees. What sort of illustration work do you do? I enjoy working freelance, and my work to date has included illustration and design work for the brewery industry, logo design, concept art for animation, illustration for academic journals and bespoke commissioned drawings and paintings. However it is my work for children's books which has really engaged me and this forms the majority of my work now. What made you decide to write a children's book of your own? My children's book work has covered book covers, interior illustrations and pop up work, mostly for a slightly older audience, however I have always loved picture books, and have wanted to illustrate one for some time, but the opportunity had not arisen. So I decided to write one for myself. The Monster Machine started as a drawing of a machine, with pipes and wires and other Heath Robinson contraptions (no relation as far as I know!) and developed from there. It was clearly a monster making machine. The book itself is about a small boy and his Dad who is an inventor who builds 'The Monster Machine' and their subsequent adventure with the Monsters. Where did you get your inspiration for your monsters? I have always loved drawing things with teeth and claws, as a child I would pore over images of snakes and crocodiles and loved dragons. So the monsters really arrived fairly easily, although the majority of them are hairy rather than scaly. I had to work with my young audience in mind so I've drawn them as fairly cute, but I hope with individual characters and attitudes. The wonderful thing about monsters is that there is no preconceived image of what they look like so you really are free to experiment with them. It is the first book I have written and it is lovely to be an author. I am still enjoying the novelty! I would love to write another one. —————————————— The Monster Machine is available at Waterstones on Bridlesmith Gate, and is also available to buy online. She has also created a Monster Machine website, where you can find out more about the monsters. Visit Nicola's website http://nlrobinson.co.uk/ or follow her on Twitter @NLRobinsonart | ||
| Foto8 Summer show 2012 selects Lincoln student Posted: 01 Jun 2012 09:18 AM PDT Final year Contemporary Lens Media student Elizabeth Cheek has been selected to show work in the 'Foto8 Summershow 2012', London. Elizabeth also came 3rd last year in the Chevrolet national competition which was also posted on this blog. London's prestigious Foto8 Gallery (formerly HOST Gallery) in EC1 is the setting for the Summer show where up to 150 images will be selected for exhibition: to be seen and judged by respected industry professionals from the photography, arts and media worlds. In 2012, the print exhibition will open on 6 July with their now famous launch party, with the exhibition continuing until 18 August.   We wish Elizabeth every success. Elizabeth's statement for her image shown above: "Carnivorous plants have always fascinated me, simply because they attract, trap and digest insects. Connotations of the sexual and feminism are present with their shapes and names. For example, the Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea Muscipula)." | ||
