A brief history so far of The Rea Garden
A Site of No Special Posted: 19 Jan 2012 08:26 AM PST A brief history so far of The Rea Garden A Site of No Special Interest A brief history so far of The Rea Garden artist project space The Rea Garden is an outdoor artist's project space in Digbeth, Birmingham. Previously the site of a burned down factory which, having been sealed off from the public for 15 years, had transformed itself into an overgrown wilderness. From autumn 2007 the site was re entered and developed by artist group Behind Closed Doors for their inaugural project The Secret Garden. The site was subsequently renamed The Rea Garden, after the adjacent river Rea. It has since been hosting an artist in residence programme which has seen varied and imaginative responses to the space. The exhibition at the G1 Gallery at Solihull Arts complex is part archive and visual history of the subtle and more pronounced changes at the site over the past 3 years. It is also a document of the creative process and the art work, some of which has been re situated in this gallery. The Rea Garden Artist in Residence programme and The Secret Garden have been supported by Arts Council England and National Lottery. |
Maeve Clancy|An Outsider in your Motherland|Exhibition|Launch Posted: 19 Jan 2012 06:01 AM PST Maeve Clancy|An Outsider in your Motherland|Exhibition|Launch Maeve Clancy An Outsider in your Motherland Maeve Clancy is a Dublin-based artist who often uses drawing to tell stories in animations, film and comics. Maeve was invited by Solihull Gallery to create a solo show and interpret the space freely. The daughter of an Englishwoman, Maeve was at one time an immigrant in the land of her mother. The work created for this exhibition is a reflection of her own experience, and hopes to draw on the large Irish immigrant community of the area.Having made numerous trips to the region to make drawings, she has used this research material to create two large scale cut paper installations, each depicting a cityscape, one is Dublin, and one is Birmingham. The viewer is able to walk in between the layers of each scene. The title of the show 'An Outsider in your Motherland' relates to the artist's feelings of alienation when she lived for a time in the UK. She found it to be the most foreign experience of her life although she had lived in other countries, with sharply contrasting languages and cultures. Maeve's fascination by the sensation of being a complete outsider in the land of her mother led to her writing and forming some comic work at the time. The Birmingham cityscape contains Maeve's tale with an invitation to the public to tell their stories. Birmingham has a huge immigrant Irish population of several generations and she wishes to gather their experiences. The Dublin cityscape also contains a comic strip story, but this is a tale of Irish people with English accents growing up in Ireland. This is a group of people who have Irish parents (or often were born in Ireland) but spent some formative years in the UK, before returning to Ireland. For these people, returning with an English accent can be a huge problem and are constantly alienated and discriminated against. Another set of people who are again 'Outsiders in their Mother(s) Land'. The artist would also like to collect more stories of people with this experience. This show deals with questions of identity, belonging and migration. These are topical concerns in both Ireland and the UK. Maeve Clancy has succeeded in creating a space in which people can experience both cultures in an environment that is at once otherworldly and authentic. |
