Strip Lychets, Taddington

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 02:10 AM PST

There is still some controversy over the origin of strip lynchets, with some authors insisting that they are a gradual drift downslope of topsoil during ploughing, while others reckon they are deliberate terracing of slopes to increase the area of cultivation and to make life easier for the ploughman. I favour the second explanation and I think this image strongly supports a man-made rather than "natural" feature. Discuss!

Driving from Buxton towards Bakewell on the A6, these are plainly visible on the left hand side after the Waterloo pub on the right and just before you enter the dual carriageway of the Taddington bypass.
