This week see's the 45th anniversary of the city of Milton Keynes.

Here's one of the most famous and well-remembered television adverts for the new city.

Sarah Wright - Drawings and Paintings - another way to look

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 06:17 AM PST

'Draw what you see, not what you think you see'

It may be an obvious statement, but often what we see is clouded by our preconceptions and assumptions about things. When we look we need to learn to look again, just in case we haven't seen it properly.

My art has helped me to consider a different perspective on my life, to find another way of looking at things, and to discover a new direction.

Over the last six months I have been exploring new beginnings, this has become the force behind my new endeavors, I was inspired by an exhibition of precious gemstones and particularly an image of the Millennium Diamond, which became the focus of the series of drawings and paintings I have embarked on.

I was looking for an image to represent my process and recovery out of depression, for me the Millennium Diamond illustrates a complexity of character, not simple, a multi-faceted shape with many different perspectives, it is polished and refined and purposeful about its cut, yet its natural raw state is not that dissimilar to most rocks, a hidden value, an unearthed treasure. In many ways a symbol of myself and the way I am able to see things differently now.

After a year of painting, drawing, planning and preparing, my exhibition preview went ahead with good attendance and some excellent response and comments, I am now looking forward to my next exhibition at Madcap in May.

"Sarah would like to thank AGMK for funding and supporting this project to make this exhibition possible"

Poet Laureate Mark Niel's new poem for Holocaust Memorial Day

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 06:01 AM PST

Please see below a poem that I have written as Poet Laureate for Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday. I'm reading it this evening at the service in Christ the Cornerstone.

There is a story behind the poem as it was inspired by a sculpture in Scarborough. The story is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-16125257

I was inspired to write the poem by seeing the sculpture before I was commissioned to write the poem for HMD and the reaction from the sculptor and the family of the man depicted on the bench has been great. The whole episode has had a "meant to be" feel about it and I'm pleased to play a part in it. There is talk of including my poem on the information board which will be cited next to the piece when it is permanently installed.

Best wishes

Mark

Man on a bench

Just an ordinary man;

older and faded at the edges perhaps,

like a photo of himself

in days when monochrome

ruled the world.

You might mistake the tears

for cigarette smoke backdraft,

borne on a playful spring breeze

but you'd be wrong.

Freddie Gilroy always cries on his birthday.

Called to war at eighteen,

he survived the six years

but the last six months

still hold him prisoner

after all this time.

The smell of death

announced with blunt eloquence

Bergen Belsen was home

to the unholy trinity of

typhus, dysentery and TB.

How many thousands can be debated

but thousands it was;

the dead, the starved and the naked,

overseen by Doctors

estranged from their Hippocratic oaths.

It was here Freddie turned twenty-four

which made sure no birthday

was ever happy again.

An ordinary man

in extraordinary circumstances.

So Freddie sits on Scarborough Bay;

still making friends and reminding us

of the heroes

we hide inside ourselves

until they're needed.

Bucks Open Studio - Tecton Gallery - get involved!

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 05:18 AM PST

It's not too late to be a part of the Bucks open studios, but you have to pay direct to them online before the 31st of January.

The cost is £22 to join the Visual images group a big Bucks art association and £25 to be a part of the open studios...there is some online discount.

We are under the 'The Tecton Group' . I asked and other artists can be added on up to the 31st. We had to pick a distinctive pic for the group so we decided to put my panther up to attract attention.

We will be using the whole of the gallery for the open studios and will have signs and arrows pointing to it, also part of the Art trail.

We met quite a few artists and gallery owners who take part so being part of the group will be a good opportunity to network and get our work into other galleries because curators from galleries round the UK go to these open studios to look at new talent.

I've shared the venue cost with the gallery to host the open studios which is £75 so you don't have to worry about it.

There will be a limit to places though we will be using the whole gallery space for the three weeks.

It will be expected for the artists to actively be a part of the three weeks, as it is expected for the artists to be present.

We will make sure there will be at least one artist there and hopefully demonstrating as it something looked for at this type of event.
