Birmingham's official arts and culture orgs and venues "in crisis"

"according to a council report seen by the Birmingham Post [...] The mac [Birmingham's Midlands Arts Centre] is one of many arts organisations facing a severe financial crisis as city council and Government spending cuts begin to bite. [and] the crown jewels in Birmingham's cultural offer – Symphony Hall, the Town Hall, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Ex Cathedra choir – are struggling to convince the council that they can work together to deliver efficiencies and have been refused a two-year funding package."

Jewellery students visit Sheffield and Hathersage

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 03:23 AM PST

Student trip to Sheffield to visit Robert Lamb Silversmith and Chimo Holdings cutlery manufacturers and to Hathersage to visit David Mellor cutlery design and manufacturers.

Students from the Jewellery & Object BA(Hons) were taken by Programme Leader Sarah O'Hana and Martin Drury to see the manufacturing techniques involved in the silversmithing trade in Sheffield. This was to support their design project "Eating is a social ritual" set by Martin, cutlery designer for the Studio William company and part-time lecturer at Lincoln.

Unknown to many, the workshops of Robert Lamb are an exceptional tribute to the history of Sheffield's silversmithing trade. Mr Lamb is one of the UK's last apprentice trained silversmiths. He talked to the students openly about extraordinary commissions he has taken on and the huge collection of hand tools he uses for specific jobs.
At Chimo Holdings, cutlery and giftware manufacturers, the factory staff showed students all the processes involved including pressing, soldering, hammering, polishing, sharpening blades, applying handles, cleaning…a typical metal processing environment, busy, noisy and smelling of machinery and oil. We marvelled at both the scrap metal heaped up in bins as well as the shiny finished products…
David Mellor, in Hathersage is a different type of factory. Open to the public, with a tea room and shop attached, this is a visit that shows the success of a design graduate whose skills include the design of our current traffic lights as well as some very elegant cutlery.
The visit enlightened the students with knowledge gathered from the deeply traditional as well as from the modern design-led. In an age where digital rules, students were able to see how idea plus metal is transformed into object and how close they are to becoming part of a truly unique profession.
