James Welling

The Mind on Fire

14 September - 25 November 2012

James Welling: The Mind on Fire, is the first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery by the American artist James Welling (b.1951). Comprising around a hundred and thirty works, the exhibition will recreate some of the artist’s seminal photographic shows from New York in the early to mid 1980s, charting the development of his abstract language and experimentation with photographic effects.

Michael Stanley 1975 - 2012

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Modern Art Oxford Director, Michael Stanley.  A short statement is available on their website.

Michael Stanley was Director of MK Gallery from 2004–2009.  During this time he was responsible for two Turner Prize-nominated exhibitions: Yeah…..you, baby you! by Phil Collins and Cathy Wilkes in 2008, as well as a range of first UK solo exhibitions by artists including Pae White, Phillip Allen, Carlos Bunga, Roger Hiorns, Carlos Amorales, Adrian Paci, Phoebe Unwin, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Richard Woods and Gilberto Zorio.  He curated the widely-acclaimed survey exhibition of work by Marcel Broodthaers and exhibitions of work by the late James Lee Byars in Milton Keynes and in Venice in 2009. He also introduced new strands of programming, including offsite projects by Johanna Billing, Wolfgang Weileder, Langlands & Bell and Hayley Newman and DRMM Architects.

Paying tribute, MK Gallery’s current Director, Anthony Spira, said:

Mike was incredibly talented and in his five years in Milton Keynes he developed a rich and adventurous artistic programme.  He forged exciting connections, from the local to the international, and was a great ambassador for the city.  He was extremely popular and will be missed enormously.  Our thoughts and feelings go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

Will Cousins, Chair of MK Gallery said:

During his time as Director Mike took the Gallery from strength to strength. He opened our eyes to new creative worlds and his passion for Milton Keynes helped us see our City in a new light. His boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm will be very much missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Scratch Nights at MK Gallery: Film Screening

Film Screening and Talk
Aaron Head: Tour of Failure

Thursday 27 September / 7pm / Free

A new film and talk meditating on the notion of failure, introduced by artist  Aaron Head.

Edited entirely from amateur online footage, this film assemblage of sound and image meditates on the languages of failure and personal validation -  two themes which abound on the internet.

Featuring over five hundred  found clips,  Head’s film includes broken clocks, bad violin recitals, glitching TVs, drunken karaoke and broken lights. Largely unplanned and circumstantial, the film’s evolving narrative plays with its own form and associations. The slippery language and relative notions of self, success and failure are explored through methods of editing and appropriation.  Casting a net over a directionless drift of images, the film plucks out the beauty of the malformed and seemingly failed and puts them into new pockets of meaning and sense.

Aaron Head introduces his film by describing the journey towards its making. He will also outline the larger Tour of Failure project, including how to submit entries to the Archive of Failure,  an unselected and unedited series of photographic /t ext responses to the idea of failure in its broadest possible sense or deviations.
