Aristide & The Endless Revolution (Dir. Nicolas Rossier, 2005, 84 mins)

Jean Bertrand Aristide, a former priest and exponent of liberation theology, became Haiti's first democratically elected president in 1991. His policies aimed to raise the standard of living for the disenfranchised majority of Haitian citizens. Rossier's documentary focuses on Aristide's later years as president, as he struggled to fulfil promises of reform in the face of an increasingly hostile relationship with the USA and mounting domestic opposition driven by business and military interests. Following a coup in February 2004, Aristide and his family left Haiti on a US-dispatched airplane (according to Aristide, against his will, according to the US state, with his full co-operation). It includes an interview with Aristide, filmed in his period of exile before returning to Haiti in 2011.

The Zombie Metaphor Part II – Panel Discussion

The zonbi is a figure derived from the language of the Dohamian people in West Africa who were taken to Haiti as slaves over several centuries. Within a nexus of folk memory, zombiedom also relates to the system of plantation slavery: the de-humanised category 'slave' and the brutality of the white master's power to control and destroy. Other versions have proliferated through travel writing, literature and, most notoriously, through the zombie movie genre.
This panel discussion, featuring key thinkers, tracks the connections and contradictions contained by the persistence of the zombie metaphor from pre-Revolutionary Haiti to the present day.

With John Cussans (Undead Uprising, forthcoming), Mark Fisher (Capitalist Realism, 2009) Peter Fleming and Carl Cederstrom (Dead Man Working, 2012). Presented in collaboration with The Centre for Critical Theory (University of Nottingham) Visiting Talks series.

Nottingham Contemporary's public programme is jointly funded by Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.
