The Theory of Haiti

Post-colonial theorist David Scott is a professor of anthropology at Columbia University, New York City, and Editor of the journal Small Axe, a platform for Caribbean focused social, cultural and political criticism, founded in 1997 when Scott was a research fellow at the University of the West Indies. Scott's Conscripts of Modernity: The Tragedy of Colonial Enlightenment (2004), a significant reference for this lecture, explored the political implications of how the past is conceived in relation to the present and future through a reconsideration of C. L. R. James's masterpiece of anti-colonial history, The Black Jacobins.

Post-lecture discussion will be moderated by Christian Høgsbjerg.

Christian Høgsbjerg is a historian who teaches at Leeds Metropolitan University and is editor of C.L.R. James's 1934 play about the Haitian Revolution, Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History (Duke University Press, 2013).

Nottingham Contemporary's public programme is jointly funded by Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.
