MK Celebrates Opening of Olympics in Cycle-powered Cinema Style

On Friday 27 July Milton Keynes will be hosting its own crazy bike race to welcome in the London 2012 Olympics.…but the riders won’t be going anywhere!  Twenty local cyclists will be pedalling like potty on static bikes to power a cinema in Margaret Powell Square in front of MK Theatre from 11.30am-2.30pm.

The Mayor of Milton Keynes will open the free event, and a selection of family friendly animations chosen by Horrible History’s animator Tim Searle will be screened, including some old favourites like Bugs Bunny.  The vintage Ra Ra Gals will also be on hand to serve you wonderful homemade cakes and refreshments.

Crazy about cycling?  Can you help keep the moving image moving?  It doesn't matter if you can't do the whole three hours.  Why not pop over in your lunch hour and have a pedal?

Discover Storyteller John Kirk & Poet Sam Berkson

Friday 10 August

As a storyteller John has presented a wide variety of experiences from Greek Myths, Aesop Fables and English Folklore and believes that exchanging stories makes us uniquely human.   Over the past ten years John Kirk has worked with some of Britain's largest Theatre in Education and Children's Theatre companies and as a drama workshop facilitator helps people of different backgrounds and abilities to discover and develop their talent for storytelling using games and role play in his fun packed sessions.

Sam Berkson has been performing poetry since 2002, taking his work around the UK and abroad. He has won the Brighton Festival Slam and the Liverpool Capital of Culture Slam 2008 and he has featured as the English representative at a Danish International Literature Festival.

His work has been published in magazines and books, has been set to music, working with beatboxers, DJs and bands and, as a host of Hammer & Tongue, he organises and promotes live poetry events for the biggest promoters of slam poetry in the UK.  With seven years teaching in secondary schools, he has a great deal of experience of educational work and as such he was subject of a feature in The Guardian newspaper on poets who work in schools.  "Year 9s are won over by his conviction and clarity, and soon become mesmerised" - Judy Friedberg, The Guardian.  Sam's work deals with the truths and lies of everyday life, attempting to uplift, emphasising the connections and similarities between people and trying to capture those moments where we see the world for what it is.

John and Sam will work together for the first time in a session that aims to bring literature alive; poetry and language will transform the space and send words and spinning around you as you delve into the world of words.  A fresh alternative to a summer family activity!

Discover Artist  Willow MitchellFriday 3 August / 10am - 4pm / Free

A fun, creative, drop-in session suitable for ages 4+ and their families.

These artist-led workshops provide you with an opportunity to contribute to a collaborative artwork, which will be completed by the end of the drop-in session.   In the process you will enjoy finding out about an individual artist and their work.

This week we meet Essex-based artist Willow Mitchell, whose practice lies somewhere between drawing and making.  Through collecting and assembling fragments of observed, imaginary and abstracted imagery her works take shape on paper or as physical objects and become rhythms of her thoughts. She looks for inspiration from dwellings, shelters and vessels and works intuitively with a wide variety of modest and unusual materials.

Join Willow to contribute to a growing work of art which will take shape throughout the day.  The main focus is 'Drawing in Space' exploring light and shadow in an open-ended and playful approach avoiding the traditional and more obvious drawing techniques.
