Earth (wind, rain and other annoying weather events) and Fire

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 09:03 AM PDT

This time last weekend I was enjoying a brief respite (including I recall a smattering of sunshine) from the unseasonably wet and windy weather during Earth & Fire International Ceramic Fair at Rufford Abbey Country Park in North Notts.

Potters demonstrate their skills including throwing with a sack on their heads at Earth & Fire!

An addition to this year's event was the "potters' games" a spectacle which saw potters pitting themselves against each other to try to pull the longest handle, throw the tallest pot and throw a pot blindfold (or more to the point with a sack over their heads). Potter were awarded ceramic medals, I particularly liked the "Loser but tried hard" perhaps that could be introduced for other sporting events? Maybe Spain or Italy would like to go home with a "tried hard trophy" tonight?

In the spirit of school uniform shops encouraging parents to buy now, may I let you know that Earth & Fire 2013 will be 28, 29 &30 June and if you are a ceramic artist and want to apply for a stall look out for forms online from September.

More fire when the torch relay came to town at the end of last week and more equally changeable weather. I believe the torch had to take refuge in the van during a lightning storm in Mansfield. Spirits seemed high nonetheless. It appears we are all up for a bit of flag waving and crowd gathering this year (for both Jubilee and Olympics) suggestions please for what will gather our collective enthusiasm for being outside in the rain in June 2013?

Don't forget in amongst all this sport you will find the Cultural Olympiad which includes the fabulous lionheart project, giant crotchet lions touring the Midlands, and due in Nottingham Market Square.
