Godiva Awakes Cycle Team to power prototype Cyclopedia in team training session

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 01:14 AM PDT

On Sunday 10 April 2011, the 100 strong Godiva Awakes Cycle Team took part in their second joint training session at Ricoh Arena in Coventry and powered a prototype Cyclopedia for the first time. Made up of novice and experienced cyclists from across the region the team are training together at regular intervals ahead of Godiva's epic journey in 2012.

Led by Imagineer Productions with support from route planner, Ian Lole from Nortoft, British Cycling Champion Mick Ives and representatives from NP Aerospace who are creating the extraordinary Cyclopedia, the Cycle Team tried out a prototype Cyclopedia for the first time. The team rode in two connecting lines behind a weighted rig which were steered by David Batstone from NP Aerospace who started his training as lead Cyclist for the journey in 2012.

The training sessions are supported by Ricoh Arena and Coventry Sports Trust. The team at the Ricoh are providing access to the facilities at Ricoh Arena on training days and Coventry Sports Trust are providing free access to the Arena Health and Fitness Club on training days plus fitness instructors to lead the spinning classes and provide fitness assessments for team members.

Kathi Leahy, Director Imagineer Productions said: "Seeing both the team develop and the Cyclopedia take shape is hugely exciting for Imagineer. The Godiva Awakes Cycle team continue to demonstrate their commitment to being part of London 2012 through our project and it was fantastic to see the cyclists try out the prototype Cyclopedia and really begin to step up to the challenge that is ahead in 2012. "

David Batstone, NP Aerospace and lead cyclist said: "My involvement with Cyclopedia was initially through my role as a design engineer at NP Aerospace assisting Roger Medwell and Harvi Sagoo. As I'm responsible for designing the concept of linking the tricycles together it is appropriate at this stage in the program I take the lead tricycle to better understand any problems and issues we may have and to get feedback from the other cyclists. We still have many design details to resolve that are inherent in a structure of this size and weight while staying true to the artists brief. As a regular cyclist I know this will be physically challenging, but Cyclopedia will present an amazing sight on the road to London."

Brian Mee, Head of Operations, Coventry Sports Trust said: "Coventry Sports Trust is delighted to be a training partner for Godiva Awakes. We are always keen to support community activity in Coventry and Warwickshire and the fact that this is a national project makes us very proud to be involved."

Godiva Awakes is part of Artists taking the lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Arts Council England is delivering the project in partnership with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Creative Scotland and Arts Council of Wales.

Imagineer Productions will create a six metre high Lady Godiva, who will awake from her sleeping chamber in July 2012 to a spectacular performance and, powered by 50 cyclists a day, journey to London to play a part in the London 2012 celebrations. She will be a symbol of justice for the 21st Century embodying the values of fair play, friendship, respect and courage that are at the heart of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

To find out more about Godiva Awakes and to follow the Godiva Awakes Cycle Team visit www.imagineerproductions.co.uk/godivaawakes.

Imagineer Productions are working in partnership with Ricoh Arena and Coventry Sport Trust to deliver the Godiva Awakes Cycle Team training days between now and 2012.
