Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs – Performances and Workshops at mac

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Workshop @ mac, birmingham
Monday 19th March 2012
6pm – 9pm
Free

Francesca Millican-Slater is a Birmingham based artist, specialising in solo performance, story-telling and theatre. She is currently touring her show Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs, nationally.

Object Workshop - People and Their Stuff:
This workshop is open to members of the public and will give participants the opportunity to explore their creative skills through devising, writing and performance.

Participants are asked to bring an object that they own (this could be purchased, passed down or found) that they are intrigued by, but may have little knowledge of. They will be supported by Francesca to work through ways of researching and generating creative material in relation to that object, with the ultimate aim of creating a 2 – 3 minute story or performance. The workshop will focus on ways of devising, writing and performing original material as an individual.

This workshop opportunity is offered on a first come first served basis, and is limited to 10 participants. To book your place please contact mac box office on 0121 446 3232 or book online

Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs:
Performances at mac, birmingham
20th, 21st, 22nd March, 7.30pm
Tickets: £10 (£7)
T: 0121 446 3232

In 2003, Francesca bought a second hand postcard for 50p. The postcard, sent from Lincoln to London was addressed to a Miss L Gibbs of 62 Douglas Buildings, Marshalsea Road, Borough. Sent on July 15th 1910, the message on the back simply reads:

'Be Careful Tomorrow. A.C.'

Part detective noir, part lecture, part personal biography, Francesca investigates the message on a postcard sent 100 years ago and finds herself obsessed by the life of the woman that received it. What happens when she starts tracing a history that isn't her own? And why did Miss Gibbs have to be careful tomorrow?

In Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs Francesca takes the audience with her on this intricate, amusing and fascinating journey, gently questioning how we remember those that went before us and how we might like to be remembered ourselves.

'Compelling' **** The Scotsman

'Clever and touching' The Guardian, Lyn Gardner

'Beguiling… a perfect antidoteto over production' The Observer, Susannah Clapp

Jane Packman Company – A Thousand Shards Of Glass

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 09:09 AM PDT

Jane Packman Company are bringing their new performance A Thousand Shards of Glass to @ AE Harris for three pop-up performances, 21-23 March.

A Thousand Shards of Glass is a fast-paced intimate/epic adventure story, using words and sound to conjure a vivid world and provoke your imagination.

In a world where nothing seems real, everything's a distraction and actions no longer matter, a young woman sets out on a preposterous mission – to change things for the better…

It's an excuse for a helicopter sequence. It's about going on a mission and getting back home.

FIRST NIGHT DOUBLE-BILL:

On Wednesday 21st March – for one night only! – we're excited to be joined by Tassos Stevens (from Coney) performing his playful storytelling show Jimmy Stewart, An Anthropologist From Mars, Analyses Love And Happiness In Humans (And Rabbits).

He says, "I'm playing a Martian Jimmy Stewart on a quest to understand love. You're the audience playing the planet Earth entirely from a sitting position with drink in hand (if you like). This is a piece of playful storytelling with an impossible sound system. It's played theatres, living rooms, lecture theatres, pubs, and parks: across the planet Earth. It's about the imperial unit of measurement of human feeling, a man who falls to Earth, and at least three other impossible things. And there's the odd joke."

We haven't seen this yet, but we reckon it'll be a treat!

PERFORMANCES: The performances take place Wednesday 21st – Friday 23rd March 2012 at 7:45pm @AEHarris, 110 Northwood Street, Birmingham, B3 1SZ

BOX OFFICE: Tickets can be booked on 0845 680 1926 or online at www.oxboffice.com (Wednesday £12, Thursday & Friday £8). There is LIMITED CAPACITY for these shows – to avoid dissapointment we recommend booking in advance!

See you there!

The Last 5 Years

by Jason Robert Brown

Musically Directed by Chris Corcoran

After a highly successful run of 'I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change' Imaginary Friend Theatre Co is excited to announce their forthcoming production – 'The Last 5 Years'. This two hander musical, written by Jason Robert Brown follows a doomed relationship from start to finish and from finish to start.

Cathy, an actress tells her story in reverse, from the painful breakup to the excitement of first meeting a new lover. Jamie, a writer, moves through the relationship chronologically, describing the rush of finding 'the one' to the inevitable strains individual success and ambition can bring.

The show features Laura Poyner and Dean Bayliss, who recently appeared at The Blue Orange in IF Theatre's musical comedy revue 'I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change' and features a mixture of heartfelt, humorous and haunting music that expertly tells this intimate story.

Counter Culture Commissions

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 08:47 AM PDT

Anti-heroes and underdogs.
Stories told sideways.
The things under the bed.
Theatre for people with something to say.
New work for new audiences.

COUNTER CULTURE COMMISSIONS
Sometime in 2013, Ovalhouse will present a season called counter-culture.
We don't know what will be in it, or what form it will take, or even quite what counter-culture means.
We have a list of questions and we want to start thinking about them. We want to work with three artists/ companies on seed commissions, which may continue growing into the counter-culture season.

What we're thinking about:

Does counter-culture exist?
Who gets to be counter-cultural?
What does counter-culture mean?
What does counter-culture look like?
Can counter-culture ever be defined positively, on its own terms? Is counter-culture protest or alternative?
How can counter-culture take place in a society which prizes itself on inclusivity?
When does counter-culture become too ugly/ violent/ intolerant to contemplate?
How is counter-culture different to sub-culture to fringe culture?
How long can counter-culture stay counter-cultural before it is absorbed into the mainstream?
Who wants to be counter-cultural?
What use is counter-cultural navel-gazing in a time of economic recession/ unarmed protesters being killed in Syria/ seemingly uncontrollable climate change?
What relationship is there between counter-cultural performance and political performance?
How would an audience have a counter-cultural experience?
Is there any point in counter-cultural performance or are we preaching to the converted?
Can counter-culture ever take place in a theatre funded by the government?
We want artists/ companies:

• who want to spend 2 weeks developing a new piece of work before showing it to an audience, as a work-in-progress

• whose work only works in a live environment

• who are intrigued or puzzled or irritated by the questions above

You get
:
• 1 week in a rehearsal room
• 1 week in a fully equipped performance space
• 3 public performances (Thurs – Sat of 2nd week)

• 10 hrs tech support
• 60% box office takings (tickets £5)
• inclusion in Ovalhouse brochure (10,000 copies)

• admin space and marketing support
• £1000 seed commission

Dates:
SLOT 1: 7 – 19 May 2012
SLOT 2: 14 – 26 May 2012
SLOT 3: 21 May – 2 June 2012

To apply:
Please send us answers to the following questions:
Who are you? (100 words)
What do you want to work on? (500 words)
What will it be like for an audience? (200 words)
Why do you want to make this piece? (100 words)
Tell us 3 influences on your work/ this piece (150 words)

Additionally, you can supply 1 A4 page with images/ links to your work.
Please indicate your availability for the 3 slots.
Please send your application to programming@ovalhouse.com

Deadline: Thursday 29th March 2012 at 12 noon.
We will be meeting applicants shortlisted for interview on 3rd April.
