Thursday 1 November, 8pm

Tickets £18.50

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud. Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual adult with a heart and a soul, a real person tackling the issues real people deal with every day. Unlike the rest of us, she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk, jazz, rock and Americana. Bruce Springsteen buys her records, and artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her.

2013 ... Come play with us at Inter-Action MK

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 05:19 AM PDT

INTER-ACTION MK Strikes Again..........

Fancy a bit of winter warming around January time?

Yes, thought you might agree, a bit of sparkle is just what MK needs when Christmas is over and New Year sets in.  Yes, I know, it does sounds a bit mad considering that those delicious, if yet a bit annoying chocolate father Christmas’ have only just been put out on the shelves, but we all know that time stands still for no one, and that ‘Lovely’ festival we had here at Inter-Action MK in July only seemed like yesterday!

So, how are we going to warm your cockles, shimmy your smiles, and get MK feeling all warm and fuzzy?
Well, Loveliness Part 2 of course!!

As you may or may not know, we received the second bid for Loveliness but the verdict came in a bit late so we couldn’t utilise the money back in the summer.  So, we put those thinking caps on down at the Old Rectory and decided what better way  than to do it all over again?!  ‘Again?’ I hear you cry!  Well yes, if something is blooming well brilliant why not do it again!

This time we are going bigger, bolder and we want MORE of MK’s Fabulous Community groups involved.  We have only just gone and bagged ourselves a blinking well marvellous venue for the event, which of course will be inside and is under wraps till all those Christmas pressies have been opened!

There will be the usual eclectic mix of wonderment and wizardry, arts and craziness, live music and workshops and of course, YOU ..... well, we are hoping!

So why not get in touch and let us know if you think you can help us add the first sparkles of summer sun to 2013, as we party with all things ‘Lovely’.

Have talent? Are you an Artist? Performer? Charity? Local organisation?  Fancy a bit of the Action??????

Historic Lace in Contemporary Design @ Artworks MK

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 02:52 AM PDT

Historic Lace in Contemporary Design free talk by Beth Walsh
Sat 3rd November, 3pm
Lace is usually associated with the skills and fashions of the past. How then is it relevant to contemporary design? This talk will explore the use of historical lace designs in new ways and in new contexts. It looks at how traditional lace techniques and attributes are used in challenging and innovative ways, in fashion, architecture and exhibition pieces.  In a more specific textile context, the inclusion of colour as well as other media and textile techniques, together with the distortion of pattern and scale, is examined by looking at examples of Beth’s work.  Lace is not of the past – it can be an exhilarating part of the present.

Places are limited so please call to book on 01908 608 108, or see our website

Edna Read

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 07:14 AM PDT

Edna Read, passed away 24 Ocotber 2012

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Edna Eguchi Read FRSA, an artist, entrepreneur, curator and passionate campaigner for the arts in Milton Keynes.

Since the beginning of Milton Keynes, Edna worked with the Development Agencies to integrate the work of artists into its buildings and landscape and to promote its image as The City of Sculpture. Edna was instrumental in so many of the city's cultural organisations, including the Milton Keynes Gallery and Theatre Company, Aim Gallery, the Public Arts Trust and the Sculpture Walk for Emigre Artists at Bletchley Park.

Paying tribute, MK Gallery Director, Anthony Spira, said:

Edna was an irrepressible force determined that Milton Keynes should have the highest standards of arts and culture possible. Her formidable energy, enthusiasm and skills of persuasion have given her a legendary status within the history of art in Milton Keynes, from the 1970s when she personally picked up paintings by Modern Masters inclusing Wassily Kandinsky from galleries in Cork Street for display at Milton Keynes Library. We are all indebted to her visionary and pioneering work and will continue to build on the foundations that she laid.

Will Cousins, Chairman, said:

Anyone who came into contact with Edna was left in no doubt about her passion for the arts and Milton Keynes. Her belief in the power of art to transform place and people was inextinguishable. The fire burned bright within Edna. There will never be another like her and I urge all those who knew her to carry forward her legacy and carry on fighting for what she so passionately believed in. She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her family and close friends.

Encounters with Drawing: Angela Rogers

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 06:51 AM PDT

Avenue Gallery is pleased to present Encounters with Drawing, an exhibition by Sussex-based artist Angela Rogers which explores drawing as a means of social encounter through the process of collaborative drawing.

Central to the exhibition will be a series of works entitled 'drawing conversations', in which Angela investigates the actuality of one-to-one human encounters through drawing with strangers she meets in galleries and other public places to create collaborative artworks which form a concrete record of that exchange.

Angela explains:

"I have always been curious about chance encounters, and I wanted to see if I could use drawing to meet people by asking them to make a drawing with me. After initial protestations 'I'm no good at drawing!', I explained we would take it in turns to draw on the same piece of paper like a conversation, most people were reassured and keen to get going.  What could drawing the spaces between us reveal? What could I learn from using drawing as means of social encounter? "

These questions became the subject of Angela's PhD research, and alongside the 'drawing conversations' she will be displaying large research maps that she used to document and manage the research process.  In contrast, she will also be showing a series of personal drawings made in the studio, which bring the openness and spontaneity from the collaborative drawing process to a different kind of visual encounter.

Encounters With Drawing will run from 2-30 November and is open to the public Mondays-Fridays 10am-4pm.  Admission is free.  Avenue Gallery is located in The University of Northampton's Avenue Campus on St. George's Avenue, Northampton NN2 6JD.  For more information about the exhibition please contact the Gallery on 01604 893046 or email gallery@northampton.ac.uk.

Articulation 2: Contemporary Views

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 06:59 AM PDT

ARTICULATION

Series 2 - Contemporary Views

Directed and chaired by John Harper, Visiting Fellow in Fine Art at The University of Northampton

The University of Northampton is now taking bookings for two new events in the Articulation series of public talks on aspects of contemporary art.

We will be welcoming Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain on 6 November, while Bill Drummond (artist, musician, writer and record producer) and Andrew Collins (writer, broadcaster and film critic) will be debating their opinions on the contemporary art scene on 20 November.  Those of you who came to the inaugural Articulation talks earlier in the year will know that these sold out very quickly, so early booking is recommended.   Each talk will last 90 minutes, including a chaired Q&A session.

Entry to each talk is £4 / £2.50 concessions (free to current University of Northampton students).  To book a place please contact Suzanne Stenning on 01604 893050 or email Suzanne.stenning@northampton.ac.uk.

PENELOPE CURTIS

NOW AND THEN

Tuesday 6 November 6.30pm

Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain, considers that art should be related across time.

In this talk she will share her thoughts on the art of today, its dialogue with the past and the concept of continuity in an age of continual change.

BILL DRUMMOND AND ANDY COLLINS

ART Vs ART: MEDIA, OWNERSHIP, WORD, MUSIC

Tuesday 20 November 6.30pm

Collins and Drummond both attended Northampton School of Art, but twelve years apart.  However, their varied career paths in the arts, media and popular culture have occasionally crossed.

Both were taught by John Harper who will chair their lively discussion.

Their ironically 'oppositional' views, though voiced with mutual respect, "will result in a rigorous debate that will be full frontal and may involve blood-letting ... little will be resolved".

The audience will be encouraged to become involved.

FAIRY TALES OF THE FAR TREE (TILLY'S MISSION) (Kindle Edition)  by Debra Danu Matthews - local author and illustrator

Enter the magical world of the Far Tree and meet the extraordinary fairies that live there.

See their tiny houses built on stilts among the leaves. Go deep into the hollowed out tree to the grand hall and follow the many tunnels that take you to various workshops as they go about their everyday lives.

In this book we meet Tilly, a ditzy, accident-prone fairy as she goes on her first mission as a tooth fairy.

Everything that can go wrong goes wrong and she needs to make things right for both a young girl and the fairies of the Far Tree.

With the help of her friend Chooo, a cloud hopping Blumpalong, and a young girl called Chloe, can she complete her first mission and avoid returning back to fairy school yet again?

The new festive winter-warmer from the local best-selling author Carole Matthews

Carole Matthews is the author of 21 novels, many of them set in and around Milton Keynes. Her latest With Love at Christmas is based in Stony Stratford, somewhere that Carole is particularly fond of. The book features the same family as an earlier novel, That Loving Feeling, which was also set in the town.

Her novels dazzle and delight readers all over the world hitting both The Sunday Times and The USA Today bestseller lists. She's published in over 30 countries and has sold 3.5 million books worldwide. For all the latest news from Carole visit www.carolematthews.com, follow Carole on Twitter @carolematthews or join the thousands of readers who have become Carole's friend on Facebook.

Can the imperfect family have a perfect Christmas?

Juliet Joyce adores Christmas - the presents, the tree, the turkey, the tinsel, everything. Already the festive spirit is upon her, which is just as well as this Christmas things are starting to get out of hand.

Her son Tom is out of work and bringing home a slew of unsuitable partners; pregnant daughter Chloe and her little boy have moved back in; Juliet's father, Frank, is getting over a heartbreak of his own while Rita, her eccentric mother, is behaving more erratically each day. Has the chaos got too much for Juliet's husband Rick?

With the big day fast approaching, Juliet hopes that she can stop everything spiralling out of control, because the only thing she wants is her family all around her and her home to be filled with love at Christmas...

Praise for Carole Matthews:

'Just the thing to make you feel good on a winter's afternoon' Take A Break

'A heart-warming read' Woman's Way

Musicians’ Union launches Live Music Kit as Live Music Act implemented
The Musicians’ Union has released a handbook giving advice on how the Live Music Act, which came into effect this month, will affect venues and performers when hosting live music events for audiences of fewer than 200 people. It’s hoped the changes will help energise and promote grass roots music; vital for the long-term health of the UK music industry. The Live Music Kit explains why ‘many small venues’ can now host live music without holding a music licence - but you will still need to comply with the rules.

Gregory Alan IsakovWednesday 24 October, 8.45pm Stage 2
Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Gregory Alan Isakov is really quite something. Although he’s only toured once before in the UK he has a dedicated fan base which existed before he even arrived. He plays as a duo and there is a possibility that he might come as a trio with his double bass. BBC radio’s Loose Ends wants him to play as he did last year and he’s been promised a Bob Harris show. If you look at some of his YouTube songs you get a picture of his popularity on the net. He is without doubt world class!

“…Recalls Josh Ritter at his most buoyant… Akin to a hazy night spent on the hillside without a care in the world. Beautiful.” BBC Radio 2
