competition and opportunity

CULTURE CLOUD is a digital space for artists to upload their artwork onto a web portal where a team of recognised national and international curators and audiences will vote for the works they like. The most popular and intriguing will be exhibited at New Art Exchange in August 2012 in a unique exhibition that will see two of the finalists crowned the winners of CULTURE CLOUD.

CULTURE CLOUD is a new pioneering digital project headed by New Art Exchange, supported by a national network of galleries and visual arts organisations. The initiative explores new ways of curating exhibitions, engaging artists and audiences using digital technology.

CULTURE CLOUD Timeline Stage 1: Registration (5 March to 4 May 2012)

CULTURE CLOUD is open to UK based artists of all levels to upload 2-dimenstional art using a unique digital platform. Artists can upload works to the CULTURE CLOUD website www.theculturecloud.com. Registration closes midnight on Friday 4th May. Mediums accepted include: drawing, painting, photography, collage, graphic art, and print. Images must be in JPG, TIFF or PDF format with a minimum resolution of 500p.

Stage 2: Shortlisting

The top 60 works will be shortlisted by a panel of featured curators from a national network of visual arts spaces and organizations.

Stage 3: Audience voting (4 June – 5 July 2012)

After that, the decision making process is placed in the hands of the audience. The 60 shortlisted works will be displayed on Artfinder.com for public voting. Everybody will be able to log in and vote for his or her preferred works via Facebook 'likes'.
There will be an announcement in London NESTA office where all partners week commencing 9th July 2012 (Date/time TBC)

Stage 4: Public Exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham (28 July – 25 August 2012) – with a Public Launch on 27 July

The top 30 most popular works whittled down from the above mentioned process will then be physically displayed in a public exhibition at New Art Exchange, August 2012. A selection of works will also be reproduced as limited edition/digital prints, meaning art lovers and collectors can buy exciting art works for their homes and in the process, financially support their favoured artists.

The public voting continues to reveal the two overall CULTURE CLOUD winners who will receive a cash prize of up to £2000, a personal iPad app and the possibility of a solo show and/or project at New Art Exchange in the future.
Winners will be announced late September 2012. There will be 2 winners - a 'curators choice' and the 'public choice' based on votes from the final stage (stage 4) of the competition.

BOA rewrites the book on collaboration

Posted: 05 Mar 2012 03:39 AM PST

Students and staff at Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA) demonstrated their Internet savvy as they took to the web on March 1st to celebrate World Book Day by conducting a rapid social media experiment with a creative twist.

The specialist digital, creative and performing arts academy, based in Birmingham's Eastside, invited staff, students and public alike to contribute to a collaborative story-writing experiment called BOA's Big Write on social network Twitter. Using the hashtag #BOAwrite, the academy wanted to see if it was possible to produce a coherent story using contributions from an unknown bank of writers.

Using a series of prompts such as 'describe the weather', the story was written in real time as the best responses to each prompt were selected and used to shape the direction of the story. Over 80 responses were gathered in just twenty minutes, and at the end of the experiment the complete story was stitched together on BOA's online blog. The result is a chilling and dark reimagining of the classic Cinderella fairytale, dubbed SinderHella.

The experiment was planned by the academy's English department, which created a string of activities to celebrate World Book Day during lunchtimes across the entire week, including a book-swap programme.

Open to students aged 16 and over since September 2011, the start of the 2012/13 academic year will see BOA's first intake of Key Stage 4 students. These GCSE-age students will be able to study specialist digital, creative or performance pathways alongside core curriculum subjects.

Gaynor Cheshire, Principal at BOA, says: "This experiment showcases the impact the Internet, and particularly social media, is having on how people work together to achieve success in the 21st century.

"Our specialist creative and digital courses exist so the West Midlands' best and brightest students are qualified to excel in this new world. That we weren't able to use all of the brilliant responses we had to our prompts demonstrates the strength and depth of talent in the region."

The independent, state-funded academy is sponsored by Ormiston Trust and Birmingham City University, and is partnered with Maverick TV and London's famous BRIT School.
