Me, Mum & Dusty Springfield

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 05:07 AM PDT

Written and performed by Stephanie Ridings

Produced in association with The Core at Corby Cube

Inspired by the music of Dusty Springfield, Midlands based Stephanie Ridings is delighted to present her tale of life at the heart of the tribute act scene in the Midlands this autumn.

Mum's funeral was last week. They were all there, Tom Jones, Chris de Burgh, Cher and Elton John; he sang candle in the wind – the original – that was Mum's idea. Everyone said it was very tasteful. Although there was some awkwardness when Tom Jones wanted to make up for 'lost time' as he put it, but as I put it, you don't miss what you've never had. It had always been just Me, Mum and Dusty Springfield and I didn't need a pseudo father figure stepping in.

Mary's life was filled with her mother's demands set within a world of Dusty Springfield. Not just Dusty's songs, but Dusty's outbursts, her drinking and finally her breast cancer. As she prepares for the scattering of her mother's ashes, she reflects on the bond between mothers and daughters, people who are not quite what they seem and coping with loss when it's just too late.

Death of a Beauty Saleswoman

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 05:04 AM PDT

Written and performed by Birmingham based actress Debbie Tracey.

Following sold out performances at The Old Joint Stock Theatre in 2011, Debbie Tracey returns with her one-woman comedy, Death of a Beauty Saleswoman, which presents the world of a woman seemingly without compassion or any sense of decency!Armed with blonde ambition, a total lack of morals and a terrifying arsenal of high pressure selling techniques, our heroine has acrylic-clawed her way to success and riches. But Jacqueline has her reasons and they become apparent as we meet the people in her life and see what made her the woman she is today.

Inspired by Alan B'stard, Debbie created the larger than life Jacqueline Jones to take a sideways look at race and stereotypes.  With comedy, drama and entertainment at its heart, the play manages to unmask the racism inherent in the chracter's own community.

Directed by Steven Luckie

Tracey manages to populate the piece with a whole host of characters and stereotypes full of hang-ups… Laugh a minute stuff… It was refreshing though to find a play which takes a sideways look at race and stereotypes in an open and very funny way, which is as it should be…
