| Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus Posted: 04 Sep 2012 03:07 PM PDT Friday 28.9.2012 Friday Night Films Fur: An imaginary Portrait of Diane ArbusDir. Steven Shainberg (2007, 2hrs 2 mins) Friday 28 September / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3), including a free drink for advance bookers. Pre-book on 01908 676 900 A film about the iconic American photographer Diane Arbus, who was known for her strange, disturbing images. The cinematic Arbus (Nicole Kidman) is torn between a bizarre relationship with a neighbour suffering from hypertrichosis, Lionel Sweeney (Robert Downey Jr.), and a conventional life with her husband Allan (Ty Burrell), a photographer. An incident with a clogged drain leads her to a relationship with Lionel and entry into a netherworld populated by transvestites, dwarves and others living on the fringes of society. |
| Posted: 04 Sep 2012 02:51 PM PDT Friday 14.9.2012 Friday Night Films Pecker Dir. John Waters (1998, 1hr 26 mins) Drama/Comedy Friday 14 September / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3), including a free drink for advance bookers. Pre-book on 01908 676 900
Set in a Baltimore neighborhood known for having the thickest local accent, Pecker tells the story of an unassuming 18-year-old who works in a sandwich shop and takes photos of his loving but peculiar family and friends on the side. Pecker (Edward Furlong), so named for his childhood habit of "pecking" at his food, stumbles into fame when his work is "discovered" by a savvy New York art dealer, Rorey Wheeler (Lili Taylor). Pecker's pictures — grainy, out-of-focus studies of unglamorous subjects — are far from professional, but they strike a chord with New York art collectors. Unfortunately, instant over-exposure has its downside. Rorey's efforts to turn Pecker into an art sensation threaten to ruin the low-key lifestyle that was his inspiration. Pecker finds that his best friend, Matt (Brendan Sexton III), can't shoplift anymore now that Pecker's photographs have increased his profile. Shelley (Christina Ricci), Pecker's obsessive girlfriend who runs a laundromat, seems especially distressed when the press dub her a "stain goddess" and mistake her good-natured "pin-up" poses for pornographic come-ons. |

CĂ©line Danhier (Unrated, 1 hr 36 mins) Friday 7 September / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3), including a free drink for advance bookers Pre-book on 01908 676 900 Blank City tells the tale of a disparate crew of renegade filmmakers who emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous moment in New York history. From the late 1970s to the mid 1980s, when the city was still a wasteland of cheap rent and cheap drugs, these directors crafted daring works that have since profoundly influenced the development of independent film. Blank City weaves together an oral history of the "No Wave Cinema" and "Cinema of Transgression" movements, through compelling interviews with the luminaries who began it all, including acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie's Debbie Harry, hip-hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, James Nares, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. The soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more. |

| Posted: 04 Sep 2012 07:19 AM PDT Thursday 6.9.2012 Thursday Scratch Nights Film Screening: Alma Mater A Lux Touring Programme LUX's annual touring programme of recent British video, selected this year by ICA film curator Steven Cairns, includes work by Steven Claydon, Torsten Lauschmann, Clunie Reid, Rachel Reupke, Hannah Sawtell and Stephen Sutcliffe. Alma Mater features work by six UK-based artists, dealing in representational methods of experience and social interaction. Alma Mater takes cultural identity as its starting point, to encompass the influence of visual culture on everyday experience; questioning ideas of Britishness and conceptions of national identity. Working with digital media, each artist invests a degree of experimentation and innovation in their approach to Moving Image that embeds the process within the work - the media itself becoming a near-character in the linear, and non-linear narratives. The screening includes a range of works made between 2000 and the present, and charts a significant period of change in our relationship with visual culture, and the society that shapes it. |
