Review: The Nutcracker @ Lichfield Garrick

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 01:41 AM PST

The Nutcracker

It says something about the state of entertainment in Britain (TV, radio, DVDs, Sky channels etc.) that nearly 400 people will turn out on a November night to see a group of Russian ballet school students perform The Nutcracker, but hey, what a night it turned out to be!

The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker

A plethora of Russian companies have toured the west over the last twenty years, some good, some bad and to be frank some absolutely diabolical. But if at the start of the Minsk Academy offering I was expecting a sort of end-of- term school show, with an "oh, what can you expect" kind of performance I was quite wrong as this turned out to be one of the most enjoyable things I've seen for ages.

If for nothing else, it's always worth going to see The Nutcracker just to hear Tchaikovsky's miraculous score. The ballet's a pretty tale, a grand family Christmas Eve party with everyone from grandparents to tiny children sharing the season, featuring entertainment including family dances, conjurers, the mechanical dolls that so fascinated the Victorians, and of course presents around the wonderful tree.

But there's more. The magic of the Nutcracker doll is that it transports Clara to a fantasy world of snowflakes and dancing sweets, and lucky old us get to follow her. This production, especially because of its young, fresh and charming cast took us all on an enchanted journey that truly satisfied, pleased, and truly worked for its almost sell-out crowd.

I can't tell you the names of any of the outstanding dancers as there was no cast list but trust me, there were some very charming young performers here, some very strong leads including the Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy whose final pas de deux was really lovely touches and a trio of enchanting and utterly composed tiny tots who nearly stopped the show.

Do try to see it if you think you deserve a bit of treat that takes you off into a land of charm, elegance, humour and beauty this November. After all, there's nothing much on the telly, is there?

The Nutcracker runs until today (November 19) including a Saturday matinee performance. For tickets phone the box office or go online at www.lichfieldgarrick.com.

Working with interns

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 02:25 AM PST

Arts Council England and Creative & Cultural Skills have published a new guide for working with interns.

Entitled Internships in the Arts - A Guide for Arts Organisations, the guide offers advice on how to develop high-quality and mutually beneficial employment opportunities, and sets out the legal obligations for arts and cultural organisations offering internships.

Recommendations include:

- an open, transparent and fair recruitment process
- internships being well planned and based on a wider internship and equal opportunities policy
- offering meaningful experiences and responsibilities that contribute to the aims of the organisation
- paying interns at least national minimum wage

The guide also highlights the legal obligations for organisations offering internships, including the need for them to ensure that they are operating within the requirements of the National Minimum Wage Act.

Building Future Artists – in the new Dec/Jan edition of mailout

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 02:00 AM PST

Staffordshire University image 2If you wanted a career in the participatory arts what would you need to study?

It was a simple question asked by a member of the editorial team – yet there was no simple answer.

Two weeks of trawling through University lists and courses taught us that not only were the participatory arts lacking a real presence in our educational institutions but the courses which were available were incredibly difficult to access as well.

mailout set off on the mammoth task to present to you the leading, and most accessible, participatory arts course this country has to offer.

Subscribe to mailout to find out how the University of Derby, East 15 Acting School, Goldsmith University of London, University of the West of Scotland and Staffordshire University are building the next generation of participatory and community art workers.

To subscribe to our wonderful Dec/Jan edition is simple, just follow the link: http://mailout.co/mailout_magazines/mailout-magazine-decemberjanuary-2011-12/
